If this is an OU set book for your course, don't buy it. It just states the obvious and is a pretty dull book. If you have having problems learning the language then speak to your tutor. I bought it because it was a set book for my language course but it'll be in my paper recycling bin soon. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

RED HERRINGS was my favourite book of last year and now (just as my friends were breathing a sigh of relief that I had stopped dragging every conversation round to the weird and wonderful origins of the words we use every day) here comes the sequel and it's even better. Did you know, for instance, that 'buttering someone up' comes from the ancient Hindu custom of throwing globs of clarified butter at the statues of gods; that 'nailing your colours to the mast' came from captains, thinking that they were unlikely to win a sea battle, nailing their flag to the mast so their more cowardly crew couldn't winch it down and surrender; that saying something has 'got legs' comes from wine tasting -- and there's hundreds more stories where those came from... If you want to check your use of grammar, wonder what word is used for truanting in South Wales, or are puzzled as to what a morpheme is, the answers are here. It never let me down when I wanted to check something. Not the cheapest or most portable book there is, but definitely the best.

I would happily recommend this set of books for even the youngest of children.

They are lovely and sturdy, with inset letter(s) on each page for your child to put their finger in and trace the shape, but most importantly they don't seem like an "educational" book to children! Even without focusing on the phonics element to the books, the pages are great fun to look at just for the pictures - there are recurring characters (eg a snake) which can be searched for on each page, and 2-4 pages at the rear of each book with exercises such as matching games, some with flaps to lift, which re-inforce the sounds covered in that book.

Because of these elements, my little girl (then aged 2) enjoyed looking at them just as much as my 4 year old ... Read More:

I just couldn't put it down until I finished reading this book. This book deals with wide-ranging, complicated issues on linguistics in the plainest English. Well done. It has inspired me, who know little about linguistics, to look further into specific topics that interest me most. If you feel like knowing what's the language all about but don't know where to start, this book is definitely your best choice.

Ultimate bible book when starting an undergraduate degree in Linguistics or English Language, this book will become one of the few books students will carry round all the time. The book covers all main and classical areas of linguistics, such as phonology, morphology, or syntax and offers a good introduction to all disciplines.

However, this book is worth buying second-hand only, because it won't be of any good use for final year students or further. Many students have bought a new copy in their first year, only realising they were selling it in the 2nd.

Good book, but short life span.
