this book is such an intresting read i would highly recomend this book to anyone who has fallen in love with florance or has an intrest in the history of the renaissance. Strathern wrights in such a way that you do not feel as if you are reading an history book, it is a wonderfull story about an amazing period in time. i am an art history student with prior knowlage of the medici but this book is perfectly writen for both readers with some knolage of the family and thoughs without. i would not recomend this book to people who are not intressted in the renaissance.

This is a very well-written book about the life and times of Caravaggio, paying a considerable amount of attention towards even the smallest details. Although I did find this book paid more attention towards what happened in his life as opposed to his paintings, this is a biography and not an art book. Although the level of detail is astounding and anybody looking into Caravaggio should consider this book an absolute must.

This is a really wonderful, unique book.
It is lovely and glossy, like a coffee table art book, EXCEPT that the text is perhaps more wonderful than the images. This book is an inciteful and original look at how colour and culture inform one another. I read it while living for 3 months in Venice and found I was seeing the city THROUGH the lens of this book. I then passed it on to visitors, who became equally mezmerized by it. This book is engagingly written, scholarly, and, in my opinion, a unique and important contribution to the existing art historical analysis of Venitian art.
well worth the asking price, a gem!

Nothing more has to be said about the merits of this famous book by the great R. Wittkower. The edition here advertised is the 3rd from 1973, it's the last one revised by the author himself, so don't be misslead by the date given in the advertisement (1992). Otherwise this book (altough only with b/w plates) is a must for everyone interessted in this period of art.

White has a writing style that may send many student readers to sleep, yet what he has to say is well considered and usually very accurate. A shallow coverage of the period, but one that provides a useful start to further research. Well worth buying for the sheer volume of illustrations!

The first half of the book is a useful overview of the period, accompanied by twenty black and white photographs of renaissance masterpieces, most notably Leonardo's Last Supper and MIchelangelo's Pieta (pre-vandalism). The second half of the book contains 48 beautiful, full-page, colour photographs (each explained in brief) of paintings which define the Renaissance, many accompanied by smaller photos of other interesting works for the purposes of comparison or illustration of the text.

I'm always drawn to art history books with lots of colour photographs and this book represents outstanding value for money in this respect. The 24-pages of prose are slightly tough going on a first reading but are worth re-reading. Not a comprehensive ... Read More:
