this book is such an intresting read i would highly recomend this book to anyone who has fallen in love with florance or has an intrest in the history of the renaissance. Strathern wrights in such a way that you do not feel as if you are reading an history book, it is a wonderfull story about an amazing period in time. i am an art history student with prior knowlage of the medici but this book is perfectly writen for both readers with some knolage of the family and thoughs without. i would not recomend this book to people who are not intressted in the renaissance.

This is a very well researched and beautifully illustrated book. The author takes us through a chronological history of art, sculpture and architecture from the medevial through to the mannerist period. The style of writing is very free and the writer sets his commentary within the historical context of the times. Several less well know artists are covered in this fourth edition.

Most references to a work of art are accompanied by an illustration although many are in B&W. The color illustrations are excellent and arranged in groups within the chapters.

Highly recommended.

A fascinating short account of the construction of what us still the largest brick dome in the world. The sheer scale of the project and the daunting nature of the challenges Brunelleschi faced are breathtaking. The book could do with a few more diagrams and modern close up photographs, but is otherwise a fine book.
