This is a very well-written book about the life and times of Caravaggio, paying a considerable amount of attention towards even the smallest details. Although I did find this book paid more attention towards what happened in his life as opposed to his paintings, this is a biography and not an art book. Although the level of detail is astounding and anybody looking into Caravaggio should consider this book an absolute must.

Nothing more has to be said about the merits of this famous book by the great R. Wittkower. The edition here advertised is the 3rd from 1973, it's the last one revised by the author himself, so don't be misslead by the date given in the advertisement (1992). Otherwise this book (altough only with b/w plates) is a must for everyone interessted in this period of art.

This book is a must have if you are studying the work of Bernini in some context or are just interested in learning more about him. Although the photographs arent excellent they are useful. The text remains one of the most helpful in getting a detailed overview of the artist, and as the book is now out of print it is otherwise very difficult to get your hands on!

For lovers of the sort of art where careful drawing is valued as a powerful means of expression or those who admire good sculpture, this is a marvellous must-have, invaluable to anyone hoping to improve their drawing ability. The excellent quality of the inumerable beautiful photos (and close up shots) offer the opportunity to closely scrutinise the subjects in the way necessary to produce really detailed drawings.

Years ago, I used to spend hours sitting on the (rather cold) floors of the V&A, making detailed drawings of the many wonderful sculptures there. I picked up this book after reading Desmond Seward's 'Caravaggio: A Passionate Life'. As I stated in my review of that book I had no prior knowledge of this artist and it was the beautiful colour plates that initially attracted me to the book. Peter Robb's account of the life of Caravaggio is a much larger book, over 560 pages with numerous B&W and exquisite colour plates. The story covers all aspects of Michelangelo Merisi's (M) life and the author attempts to answer the questions about this artist's dark life. Peter Robb provided an insight into the politics, art and people of the period which I found very interesting and put much of M's life in perspective.
