. I Used to Know That: Stuff You Forgot from School
City Travel Guides > Books > Sports- Hobbies and Games
by: Caroline Taggart
May 22, 2008
This is the age of bite ( or is it byte) sized information. The older generation i.e. me think we are divided from the younger by the fact that we learnt our information by rote. The old exam system was based you learning what the teacher told you or wrote on the board and you passed exams by regurgitating it .
As a result we confused knowledge with intelligence. These days you do not have to know the capital of Kazakhstan ( Astana) as the Internet will tell you.
I am often told by the less intelligent that most human endeavours are easy or straightforward because you can look it up on the Internet. They forget it is raw information and you have to intelligently apply it.
I constantly tell people that no doubt ... Read More:

. Tricks of the Mind
City Travel Guides > Books > Sports- Hobbies and Games
by: Derren Brown
October 08, 2007
I wasn't even expecting this to be a self-help book, but it not only entertained me, but is startlingly good at improving what was a poor memory. I had really struggled with memory books by the like of Tony Buzan, but Derren Brown's wit, imagination, clear explanation of the Loci System as well as superior version of the Major System had me remembering football results and phone numbers with ease.
Although he uses plenty of tongue-in-cheek use of superlatives to describe himself and his achievements, this book is packed full of tips and techniques you can actually use. Unlike many "self help" books, which is just the author explaining just how wonderful they are, without actually teaching anything.
If you're into crystal healing, you're ... Read More:

. QI: The Book of General Ignorance
City Travel Guides > Books > Sports- Hobbies and Games
by: John Lloyd, John Mitchinson
October 05, 2006
This is a fun book to pick up and put down at leisure but it loses something for not being delivered by the dry tones of Stephen Fry. If you are an avid watcher of the series you will have heard most of these entries before but there are still some gems among them. Some of the explanations do go on and there seems to be a fascintaion with space that just doesn't excite me but there were a few chuckles along the way. At the end there is a disclaimer inviting readers to send in alternative answers or explanations which does dilute the whole thing a bit. Good for picking up trivia to delight your mates at the pub.

. Every Hand Revealed
City Travel Guides > Books > Sports- Hobbies and Games
by: Gus Hansen
May 01, 2008
This was a really enjoyable read for me. Gus goes through the 300+ hands that he played in winning some big tournament in Australia and explains his thinking hand by hand. A shame that he didn't mention all the hands he folded preflop - including these would have given a better picture of Gus' play, even if it would have made the book more boring in places
But I'd better tell you why I liked the book before I go any further. It reminded me a bit of reality television. I felt like I was sitting there watching Gus from behind the safety of a TV screen and waiting for the car crash to happen. It was aloso a bit like listening to Dark Side of the Moon in that it gave me a picture of what goes on inside the head of a barking loon
You see, Gus is a very ... Read More:

. James Whitham: What a Good Do
City Travel Guides > Books > Sports- Hobbies and Games
by: James Whitham, Mac McDiarmid
July 23, 2008
I've been a motorbike fan for as long as I can remember but it's only been the last few years that I've got into road racing. So I only know James Whitham from hearing and seeing him commentate on ITV and Eurosport, I never saw him race. I love the race commentary paring of James and Jack Burnicle and the way they joke and interact together. When I saw that this book was being published in Auguist it was one I knew I must have. I'm not a person who reads a lot of biographies but I had a feeling this would be good. When I saw the price that Amazon was selling it for I ordered it straight away. It arrived yesterday nmorning and I read the first chapter last night. I could just hear James narrating it in my head as i read it, it's written just the way he speaks, using northern phrases ...
