.Tess of the d'Urbervilles (Penguin Popular Classics) City Travel Guides > Books > 19th Century by: Thomas Hardy January 13, 1994 I was first introduced to Thomas Hardy at the age of 12 via an extract of this book in a girls' annual. Just that one short passage was enough to make me want to read the rest of the novel and from then I became a Hardy fan and this remains my favourite Hardy. If you have never read Hardy this would be a wonderful introduction to a great writer. This is the tragic tale of Tess Durbeyfield, Thomas Hardy's favourite heroine. .Just So Stories (Selected) (BBC Audio) City Travel Guides > Books > 19th Century by: Rudyard Kipling February 04, 2008 I'd always enjoyed being read and later reading myself the Just So Stories. With children of my own I started them on these stories and having a cd of them means we can enjoy them on the move. The joy of hearing Jonnie Morris' super animal voice characterisations just adds to the enjoyment - takes me back to watching Animal Magic - deep joy! Four year old daughter enjoys listening to the stories but my nine year old son has become a great fan - this now regularly is on his cd player in his room. I love all the characters, especially the way they are neither beautiful or perfect people. But the main reason I love this book is the character of Rochester and the way he loves Jane. .Wuthering Heights (Penguin Popular Classics) City Travel Guides > Books > 19th Century by: Emily Bronte January 13, 1994 I thought it was time to expand my reading horizons with some classic literature without blowing my budget, so this Penguin Popular Classic at £2 seemed the ideal choice, particularly as, when I used the 'Search Inside' facility, it showed in the list of contents a preface, chronology, introduction and further reading. When I received the book, these 42 pages were missing, and on closer inspection I see the 'Search Inside' facility shows a completely different, more expensive Penguin edition. I still remember having to force myself to read a page or two each night just to get through it. The horror indeed. I recently thought I would try reading it again as, after so long and with more mature tastes I might enjoy it. But no. I gave it my best shot - and then gave up. .Great Expectations (Penguin Popular Classics) City Travel Guides > Books > 19th Century by: Charles Dickens January 13, 1994 I first read this (actually that should say I was first forced to read this) in school over 20 years ago. I hated it. It was disected to within an inch of its life and I came to dread those lessons with a passion. What a shame that school can manage to put off even the most ardent of readers. Isn't reading supposed to be about enjoyment? I picked this up a couple of weeks ago out of curiosity and read the first page while standing in the bookshop. Before I knew it I had read the entire first chapter and loved it. There is such humour in Dicken's books that would have been totally wasted on me as a 15 year old. It took me a few weeks to read (hence the 4 stars as I had to concentrate more than with other books) but I thought it was just wonderful. I ... Dostoyevsky understands the danger that lurks in all of us, and the mind's ability to twist and justify actions and thoughts with the greatest of ease if we are thrown off the righteous path. This is reflected beautifully in the most extreme of scenarios that Roskolnikov finds himself in.
