An excellent read all the way the through,keeps you gripped throughout all three books,twists and turns everywhere keeping it very exiting.definitely the best fiction book i have ever read and beats the films by a hundred miles.

I'm not a huge fan of detective or crime stories. I've read a few of the modern crop. Starring world weary cops/forensic pathologists/police photographers etc who are so much better than their incompetent colleagues, yet drink like fishes at a curry contest and get off with every woman they meet. John Actor plays Monkfish etc. Yawn. But a detective in Nazi Germany? That sounded interesting: historically intriguing, and ethically too. A policeman floundering in a corrupt society, full of the echoes of history.

Unfortunately, what I found were all the usual clichés, plus a lot worse. Unreal dialogue, plentiful name-dropping: oh yes, and a low ranking detective who talks back to the likes of Heydrich, Himmler, and Göring. ... Read More:

I must admit I am reading the novels in order. Why I waited so much to do so I will never know. Guess having seen the films in my youth (I mean the Sean Connery one's... Moore's slapstick was not here not there) put away the idea for too long.

What a mistake.

Fleming created out of the blue a new kind of thriller, outrageous, with really well thought villains, and a fatalistic hero that is not so cool blooded as in the films. There is a great "M" character, and much less gimmicks and silly artifacts in the novels. And of course the BIG PREMIUM of getting inside Bond's thoughts...

I can not say if truly this three volume omnibus is the peak of the saga, up to now I must agree, everybody says so, and they are superior to ... Read More:

Three fantastic authors. Three poor stories. I really looked forward to this book as I love all three authors and I had read everything else Laymon had written so the chance of a new story seemed promising. I have to say I wasn't impressed. All three stories were slow and pointless. I just couldn't get into this book at all.

First of all this OMNIBUS is really a very good quality/money bargain.
Once I decided it was time to read the originals (wasn't I right!) of course this is the best option.
I started with QUANTUM OF SOLACE (the complete short stories), liked them... and then bought the rest of the paperbacks.
After reading the first three "long" novels, I am not going to tell you nothing you already do not know... only one thing is a valid advice... if you only have seen the films... it is about time you read the books... Ian Fleming "had it" (the talent).
Great villains are always the backbone of a thriller and Le Chiffre, Mr BIG and Sir Hugo Drax are "excellent creations"... Bond is quite subdued and fatalistic... he doesn't think he will live to 45!... that ... Read More:

If you like quirky, short, crime stories, then this is the book for you. Unfortunately, I bought it because we are going to Vegas later this year and I thought it would increase my excitement about going. Instead it kind of made me nervous and hope it's not as horrible as some of these stories make out! Great for a holiday read when you don't want to expend too much time or energy reading.

This is an excellent introduction to contemporary Italian crime fiction containing a range of writers at the top of their form who have here produced short stories which are at once highly varied in approach and extremely powerful. The translator, Andrew Brown, has done a terrific job and I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
