. Buffy Season Eight Volume 2: No Future For You: No Future for You v. 2 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)): 2 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse))

I was a late convert to the world of Buffy. Like many I had watched it as a teenager, enjoyed it, and then been persuaded by who knows who, that it was not something one should be proud of watching. Then I watched Serenity and thought it was great, backtracked to firefly and loved that too. Then one day somebody told me that the same guy that did those, did buffy. "WHAT!" I said, "That cant be!", half clouded by the fact that everybody said that Buffy was rubbish, half trying to cover up my embarrassment of not making this ling earlier.
So to cut a long story short, I watched all of Buffy in a very short time, and I loved it. And then I watched Angel and I loved it less, but loved it all the same.
Before Mr. Whedon ... Read More:

. Touch the Dark
City Travel Guides > Books > Horror
by: Karen Chance
June 28, 2007
Deliciously gory and sexy. I liked the well-established supernatural world that Chance created and her exploration of ideas. The magic involved was unusual (in that I hadn't come across it quite like that in a novel before) and the plot was interesting enough to keep me reading until the end, though I don't think I would read it again. The story is a series of detailed, lengthy scenes that takes place over a fairly short space of time and I did find the sometimes slow pace of events irritating at times, but I would buy and read the sequel for more.

. Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson)
City Travel Guides > Books > Horror
by: Patricia Briggs
April 01, 2008
I love this series for its fabulous and very clever plots as much as for the super-nature of the subject material. with this new instalment in the Mercy Thompson series, Patricia Briggs excells herself. This book is a must-read for any fan of the genre and for me this hits the hights of the first few Anita Blakes and at points, exceedes them.
The crime at the centre is well plotted and has enough clues to keep you guessing but not solving until close to the end; characters are believeable, complex and interesting and the finale....what can I say...previous reviews are right- make no mistake this is not easy reading. Violence on an exponential scale but told with such a human heart as to make you weep...and weep I did, for about the final ... Read More:

No graphic novel collection is complete without some titles, like Watchmen, Knightfall, Sin City and Hellboy!!
I first started reading Hellboy before the first movie came out, I was curious, got one to try and now have them all (and the novels and figures and statues). Seed of Destruction is the first in the series and it jumps straight in to Hellboys life in the B.P.R.D. (bereau for paranormal resreach and defense, kind of like a supernatural CIA). You just see he is a demon working for the agency, and he has a cool coat and a massive stone hand. But as the story goes on, you find he was summoned by Nazis and Ra ra rasputin to help win WW2. But he was saved by Proff. Bruttenholm and now fights for the good guys! Along with Abe Sapien (fish guy) and Liz ... Read More:

. I Am Legend (S.F. Masterworks)
City Travel Guides > Books > Horror

I read this short book after seeing all the reviews (thank you) and thought I must give it a go. I have tried lots of 'horror' novels over the years and they have never really engaged me. I read this over two evenings and found it totally absorbed me. The text races along wonderfully.
This is not my typical read - favourite books include: Papillon, Hamlet, Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, Grapes of Wrath and The Old Man and the Sea. I assume it is because having read them they stay with you and insist on being read again. Though my wife prefers to suggest I am simply a bit weird.
As for the new 'Mr Smith' film, which I enjoyed, they follow the same theme but to compare them would be like comparing a Mars Bar and a Snickers (I still prefer to call them ... Read More:

. The Woman in White (Penguin Popular Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Horror
by: Wilkie Collins
February 24, 1994
For me what makes this novel great is not the love story between the social rising Walter Hartright and childish stereotypical heroine Laura Fairlie. Instead it is the depiction of the intelligent and brilliant Marian Halcombe and the wonderfully evil Count Fosco that reveals Collins' true writing talent. The speeches of these characters reveal feminist and social criticism adding an interesting dimension to the novel.
The plot itself is well constructed and the series of narrators makes the novel interesting and varied. The text is full of plot twists and is at times shocking, typical of sensation fiction. Admittedly some portions are a little tedious but I would definitely recommend reading this book.

. Demon Apocalypse

by: Darren Shan
May 05, 2008
Grubbs Grady is back, and he wishes he wasn't.
There are two things that Grubbs regrets the most: letting his transformation take away the lives of the ones he loved, and trusting Juni. When we last left him, Grubbs was on a plane ride with Juni, who promised to take care of him and love him. But while on board, Juni's true colors appeared, and they weren't so pretty.
Turns out she had been working for Lord Loss and had used Grubbs' secrets and trust against him, lying to not only him but also to Dervish, who had fallen for her as well.
Now Grubbs is trying to fend for himself, which isn't looking so bright since Lord Loss' little helpers are happily feeding on the passengers on the plane, while Lord Loss himself is trying to take ... Read More:

. Stray
City Travel Guides > Books > Horror
by: Rachel Vincent
2007-06
Stray may actually be the best book I have ever read! You have the already messed up heroin being dragged through a frustrating family life that makes you want to scream, but at the same time sometimes wanting to bash some sense into her. Rachel's writing is beyond amazing is intensive, felt, raw and yet real, you are there with Faythe feeling her struggle in every living thing which she feels no edits no cuts and yet at the same time its not real its supernatural ... and of course there are the yummy boys! A book every twenty something girl must read!
(Some **spoilers** Kelley Armstrong's story line and Rachel Vincent's story line below)
I do admit there are some similarities in areas Kelley's books but the underlying message/audience is different
Kelley's; ... Read More:

. Blood Beast (The Demonata)
City Travel Guides > Books > Horror
by: Darren Shan
January 02, 2008
From the first moment in book one, Lord Loss, when Grubbs Grady encounters the Demonata and their evil minions it is obvious to the reader that Darren Shan books are from a different dimension. You really have to read them with an open mind, and a slightly twisted one too! The heroes are constantly changing, from Grubbs in book one to Kernel Fleck in book two, back to Grubbs in three and then Bec in some of the later episodes. Whoever is in charge you can absolutely guarantee a frightening ride through another world, which Shan depicts so very well. As far as teenage horror goes this is about as entertaining as it gets. You cannot compare it to the real horror masters, such as James Herbert, Shaun Hutson, Brian Keene or Conrad Jones, but they are truly entertaining, even though the storylines are flimsy ... . Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Long Way Home
City Travel Guides > Books > Horror
by: Joss Whedon
November 21, 2007
When I read that Joss Whedon was collaborating with the Buffy comic people I jumped out of my seat. This is season 8 but in comic format, and boy is it good...I have just started reading "No Future for you" which is the second book collecting the next 5 or so issues. Buffy at war with more than just demons! Dawn has for some reason become a giant! Xander a general type of the slayer army! Willow can...well I havent given much away here and dont want to risk giving any more. Suffice to say that there are more than a few twists here including some old and terrible characters from the Buffyverse. Take it from me once you pick this book up you wont be putting it down until the very last page. Also Angel has a similar thing going on with a Season 6 comic series.
