I purchased this book for an Arabic class I was attending and found that it works very well in class, as a useful resource, and at home where I can continue to learn on my own.
I certainly recommend the book and CDs to anyone looking to learn Arabic

This is an excellent little book. Don't be misled by its diminuitive size it is a 'Tardis' of information, words and phrases. Instantly usable by beginners and the more experienced foreigner to Arabic alike. Very good value for money.

This book proved to be a lifesaver for me. It is extremely well set out, and sub-divided for ease of use. It includes sections that cover areas you are likely to come across on a day-to-day basis such as 'greetings', 'at the market', 'at the post office' and 'emergencies', to name but a few. But as well as useful phrases, it also gives a summary of the chapter explaining in more detail the way of life. For example, before the section on shopping, there is a paragraph covering the art of bartering, and before the 'eating out' section, Moroccan hospitality is explained so the reader is in the know when he arrives at the restaurant or the guest's house. I've used the Dummies Guides before, notably in computing (which I've taught). I have a good ear for languages and speak French which is good enough to have native speakers of that language ask which part of the country I come from. However, I found this a really old-fashioned approach. Fun??! When you spend the first 58 pages (it's described as "Fun and Games") learning basic grammar? Sorry, but it's not for me.

...which really packs a lot into it's size. It's great that phrases are written in both Arabic and English transliteration, which is perfect for rubbish Arabic speakers like me. An absolute bargain!

I can only echo the other reviewer on this book; this amazing book has really got me into the Arabic language.

Fantastically easy to digest, a great range of useful words, and the flash cards are, as promised, very helpful.

Highly recommended to anyone; I eagerly await more releases from this author!

This is an excellent little book which packs a lot into its slim 150 or so pages. I turned to this book when getting bogged down half way through "Teach yourself Arabic" by Jack Smart and Frances Altorfer --- which I'll review when I finish it.

Mastering Arabic Grammar comprises some 20 units split into 2 parts: Part 1 "Fundamentals of Arabic grammar" and Part 2: "Arabic verbs". The 20 units are carefully written so that you progress smoothly as you move through the book. Each unit also contains a handy little summary of the main points covered.

I have been wanting to study Arabic for some time and have been looking to find a suitable text book to assist me. I have tried some of the more popular choices i.e. "teach yourself...." and find them not be useful. This is different with its accomponied DVD media it provides and interactive experience which gels well with the excersises in the book.

Although the Book states it is for beginners I would definatly advise new comers to get to grips with the basic alphabet and principles of reading arabic script. This book assumes you know how to read Arabic Script as this follows on from the precursor book Alif Baa.

It's quite difficult to find a dictionary that does English to Arabic and vice versa, and this one seems to do a good job at it. I've not had any problem with the order of words, or with missing words (jameel, for example, is in there in both English and Arabic sections). There are a few useful lists at the back of the dictionary: days, months, countries, regions, etc.

A couple of minor criticisms though: firstly, the introduction to how the entries are set out could be better. Secondly, it's difficult to know the precise meaning of a word, because there are no example sentences. This can lead to some amusing word uses! However, for it's main use -- checking spellings and whatnot -- it serves me well.

I cannot talk highly enough about this series! I have been trying to learn Arabic independently over the last 6 months, in which time I have bought numerous books and dvds to help me. None of these compare to this one: the book is clearly layed out with exercises that are simple to understand and increase in difficulty as you progress through each step. The DVD puts Linguaphone's to shame: it has a menu that makes navigation easy, a variation of teaching techniques for all learners and the sound is of a good quality. I would highly recommend this to anyone trying to learn Arabic independently or with tuition. Al-kitaab fii ta allum al-arabiyya follows this book in the series and is equally as excellently written.
