. Russian (Lonely Planet Phrasebook)
City Travel Guides > Books > Russian
by: Jim Jenkin
March 01, 2006
I took this book with me when I visited Russia for the first time with absolutely zero knowledge of Russian. This book was invaluable! Due to the nature of the Russian language, being one that is spelt as it is spoken, I was using words and phrases from this book and being mistaken for a local! The problem was I could not understand the responses I got many times, but that is not a fault of the book.
The book also lists words and phrases in Cyrillic, which means it's extremely easy to learn to read in Russia and I was able to read nearly all of the Cyrllic alphabet within the day!
On my journey on the Trans-Siberian railway I shared my carriage with a native Russian from Omsk. He had only a bare basic understanding of English from ... Read More:

. Oxford Russian Dictionary
City Travel Guides > Books > Russian
by: Oxford
May 10, 2007
I agree with the previous reviewer completely and cannot put it better. As a proud owner of the Oxford French and Oxford Polish
Dictionaries, I am disappointed with the Oxford Russian Dictionary, (and how naive was I, in eager anticipation of the 4th edition, to have thought that it would one day live up to its name and rank alongside the great bi-lingual dictionaries of other major European languages.
In compiling the ORD, OUP did not collaborate with any Russian dictionary publisher. For a bilingual dictionary of this scale, this is a key weakness. It is perhaps therefore not surprising that ORD cannot stand comparison with the OFD and OPD. In fairness to OUP, however, I must point out that good reference books on the Russian language ... . The Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs: 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs (Big Book of Verbs Series)
City Travel Guides > Books > Russian
by: Jack Franke
January 01, 2005
The last time I learnt a language I choose the Barrons 301/501 guide, but this time I decided to try The Big Silver Book, and I am very pleased that I did.
It's very clearly laid out and has easy-to-understand, but not sub-par or too-basic, descriptions of the different verb types and conjugations at the beginning of the book, as well as an extremely useful 'verbs of motion' index (Russian verbs of motion are far more particular than English - you cannot just say 'go', you must choose a particular verb for your mode of transport, then change the aspect according to whether the journey has been completed already, will be a return journey, or whether it has a specific destination in mind before its commencement).
There are some exercises at the back of ... Read More:

. Russian in 10 Minutes a Day
City Travel Guides > Books > Russian
by: Kristine K. Kershul
January 01, 1998
This book is frankly poor. The emphasis is on vocabulary, although it does throw in a few set phrases for you to use. However, this book is not going to enable you to actually SPEAK Russian or understand anything of any real merit. Yes, I realise it is for complete beginners, but Take Off in Russian is also aimed at the beginner market and can do a lot more for you than this. If you want short lessons, then Take Off provides this (although they are more like half an hour than 10 minutes - but then what can you really learn in 10 minutes?). Take Off also provides you with the tools to produce language on your own, rather than relying on the few set phrases you might have found in a book like 10 minutes.
Another criticism of 10 minutes is the pronunciation guide. ... Read More:
