City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Snowdon: The Biography
.Snowdon: The Biography

by: Anne De Courcy

June 04, 2008
I have just finished a book on Princess Margaret, and was told that accomplished author Anne de Courcy had written an authorized biography about Antony Armstrong-Jones,also known as Lord Snowdon.
The book was written with his approval and full support, and he asked his many friends and acquaintances to make themselves available to Ms deCourcy
should she wish to interview them.
And it is a detailed, warts and all account of Snowdons life and many loves.
Tony's mother was an English Jewess, his father a Welshman. They divorced when he was just a boy. His mother was vain, unreasonable, demanding and self centred. She reminded me very much of the actor Peter Lawford's mother.
His father, a barrister was not a constant ... Read More:

by: Eric Ives

This highly informative account of Anne Boleyn brings to life a Tudor woman once seen as elusive and obscure.
Due to the high volume of biased primary accounts of Anne Boleyn written by the likes of Chapuys (the Spanish ambassador to England at the time) and others, it has been notoriously difficult to make an objective and impartial assessment of Anne Boleyn however Ives succeeds in bringing the true character of Anne Boleyn to life using a variety of sources, challenges biased accounts of Anne's life (such as Chapuys' accounts of the ailing marriage) and also presents compelling evidence to support his assertions, such as the controversy surrounding Anne's birth date.

Whilst at times, Ives presents the not so endearing qualities of ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Elizabeth and Leicester
.Elizabeth and Leicester

February 12, 2008
There are certain themes in history that have captured the imagination, whose heroes and heroines escape from dusty pages and occupy a place in our own times. At every point in between the same stories and people have their tales told, with an interpretation that fits the relevant age. Of all the kings and queens of England, one has held the hearts of her subjects for longer than any other - Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen.

Either by her own deft knack of public relations, or by the expert spinning of her advisers, the Queen of England was a legend in her own time. Her portrait was standardised, and is as recognisable today as it was four centuries ago. The idea of her being married to the kingdom, both her virginity and devotion intact, has endured ... I had previously found the Tudor age rather complicated and a little vague due to the complexed nature of Henry VIII's numerous wives and children.I started to read this book and became absorbed in the intrigue of this period of Tudor England. It provides in depth details of Henry's children and the profound effect their individual lives would have on the political and social developments of the Kingdoms they ruled, be it long or short. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Tudor period and which leads to arguably the greatest sovereign in Elizabeth I that this country has seen.

Not as good as the first book in the series but definetly better then the 2nd book.

I did like this book and took it as an update. It gave an interesting insight into what was happening. However, if there were any more books it would have got very boring. It ended at the right time.

There were some stories or aspects of the book that were already discussed in the first two books, which got quite boring at times. However, a good read. The stories that were mention again were written as reveiws or reminders. It would have been good if the concept and the stories were different, as too much repatition can be really boring.

At times i did get bored.

After reading Princess i wanted to know or learn more on this story. However, it is sometimes ... Read More:

A fascinating book that deals with each of his children in turn. It gives the reader an insight into why they acted as they did. It proves that really all four of them were neglected lonely people. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone interested in this period.

.Zara Phillips: A Revealing Portrait of a Royal World Champion

by: Brian Hoey

July 03, 2008
This book glossed over Zara's eventing career, preferring to focus on her relationships with the rest of the royal family and how this has shaped her life.
To be honest there is probably less than a chapter's worth about her riding and fantastic partnership with Toytown which is a real shame.
A good read if you want to know the in's & out's of a royal childhood but disappointing if you are looking for details of Zara's life in the eventing world.
