. Mein Kampf
City Travel Guides > Books > Germany
by: Adolf Hitler
November 21, 2007
I read Mein Kampf in the hope of understanding some of the madness of Hitler's actions and wasn't disappointed. Although written in the 1920s what can be found here is a sort of blue print for World war Two.Through the book Hitler exposes the dark side of the human race and tries to manipulate the reader into agreeing with him. Unlike the German people of the time the reader has the luxury of knowing the evil of his plan. An informative and dark book that gives history a slightly different slant

. Night
City Travel Guides > Books > Germany
by: Elie Wiesel
August 27, 1981
Night by Elie Wiesel is not only one of the definitve works on Holocaust literature, it is one of the most definitve works on humanity.
This is a factual record of Wiesel's experiences from 1941, when the author was 12 years old, dedicated to learning Talmud and thirsting to learn Kaballah, to his experiences after Jews were forced into ghettoes and then transported to the death camps.
Written in Yiddish in 1958 and translated into English in 1960.
It is a record of Wiesel's childhood in the death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau. It is dedicated to the memory of Wiesel's parents and his little sister Tzipora who were cruelly murdered in the Nazi inferno.
The book is stark in it's record of everything seen by the author and asks many questions ... Read More:

. Blood Red Snow Memoirs German
City Travel Guides > Books > Germany
by: G Koschorrek
March 31, 2006
I recently bought this book from Amazon.co.uk and I can say that it is well worth a read. I know that there are loads of memoirs out there from soliders fighting in the various allied armies, but I jumped at a chance to read a book from the frequently under-represented German persepctive.
The author writes very well and I felt that he was able to portray the sheer terror of fighting on the Eastern front very well. One engagement in the early part of the book really had me on the edge of my seat as I wondered how they would repel an attack frmo Soviet armour without any ATG's etc.
Great book, great author, great read.

. The Drowned and the Saved (Abacus Books)
City Travel Guides > Books > Germany
by: Primo Levi
February 01, 1991
The author, Primo Levi, tries to understand the rationale behind Auschwitz, Treblinka, Bergen-Belsen. Dismissing stereotyped images of brutal Nazi torturers and helpless victims, Levi draws extensively on his own experiences and substantial intelect to delve into the minds and motives of oppressors and oppressed alike. Describing the difficulty and shame of remembering, the limited forms of collaboration between inmates and SS goalers, the exploitation of "useless violence" and the plight of the intellectual, Levi writes about the issue of power, mercy and guilt, and their effects on the lives of the ordinary people who suffered so incomprehendingly. A sad tale of an attempt to rationalise mans behaviour in the most extreme of circumstances.
I found this to be an interesting read but ... Read More:

. Two Lives
City Travel Guides > Books > Germany
by: Vikram Seth
July 06, 2006
This book shows how extraordinary two 'ordinary' people can be. Even if it doesn't set out to, it highlights the vacuousness of being famous just for being famous. These two lives were the opposite: not famous, but fascinating, real and well lived. They have so much to tell about being human, India, World War Two, suburban Britain, suffering, hope, love and the interdependence of situations, times and places. How many people, like Shanti and Henny, have life stories just waiting to be told, but they don't tell because it's just their life; it's their business. Who would be interested, perhaps they think...
Of course, it helps here that their stories are told by a great writer who loved them both and knew them so well. But should the stories have been told? Should Vikram Seth have revealed ... Read More:

. Resistance: A Frenchwoman's Journal of the War
City Travel Guides > Books > Germany
by: Agnes Humbert
September 02, 2008
When the German army invaded Paris in 1940, Agnes Humbert a strong minded, politically aware art historian, immediately knew that she had to 'do something', the thought of accepting the invasion was anathema to her and she helped to form one of the first organised groups of the French Resistance. The speed with which this was set up and began to operate was staggering. She had excellent contacts and friends in literary and journalistic circles and an underground newspaper, combating the German propaganda machine, was printed and circulated around Paris. It was simply amazing that they managed to keep this going and out of the hands of the authorities for nearly a year before they were betrayed and she was arrested and thrown into prison. Seven of the men who founded the group died by firing squad and ... Read More:
