I bought this book using money I had recieved on my 21st birthday, I did not buy it because I needed it for a course of anything like that, I bought it just out of interest. I must say I do not regret buying this book one bit, as it is just so interesting.
The names of Saints are something which I frequently encounter in day to day live and until I purchased that book is something I did not give much thought to. The book opened my eyes to how interesting the topic of Saints is and a greater insight into their significance in the modern world. Overall this is an excellent book to own and I would recommend it to anybody who is interested in religion, history, or to anybody who is simply curious about the signifiance of saints.

She frequently digresses onto the subject of prayer and this contains some of the most lovely descriptions of the different stages of closeness to God. This is Spain's second most popular prose classic and allows a glimpse of the real woman behind the sainthood. Read this carefully, it is not a book to be read in one sitting. If you read it slowly, it will reward you with new insights into your own spiritual life.

I have grown up with the Divine Mercy devotion and little concise books containing the overall message of Divine Mercy - only recently did I read Saint Faustina's diary through from cover to cover and particularly love to go back to it a few times a week now. It is important for people particularly today and a vital insight into God's unfathomable Divine Mercy. I personally like to open it randomly and in particular read Jesus' Words which are printed in bold. This book should be kept with a copy of your Catholic Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read perhaps even only a short paragraph every day or two. What a beautiful book. Only a few pages in and I was captured. Augustine writes with such passion and honesty - braving areas of the Christian life many of us prefer to pretend we never experience. This book is the most inspiring I have read and really fuelled my hunger for God. Without imposing views on us, Augustine's observations on life and God provide answers to the most difficult aspects of Christian life. This really left me on a high - revitalised, after some awful life experiences. I felt moved and strengthened, particularly by how much I felt I could relate to Augustine who is very open and honest about his life and faith. This book is a must have. Really great book, excellent for an introduction to Augustine and north African church history in general. Also great for people who are interested but don't want to go in-depth and have no intention of reading further.

Chadwick's style really makes the book, he writes with such wit and makes Augustine sound like a real-life person - something we rarely think of historical figures as being! I recommend Chadwick's book on "The Early Church".
