. The Railway Man
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Eric Lomax
January 03, 1998
Without doubt the finest book I've ever read. Anybody who can read this without tear staining the pages has no soul or emotions.
It starts slowly showing a boy who is awkward because he doesn't share the normal interests of youth but it develops through his age experience and the horrors he endures to provide a man of intense intelligence compassion and the ultimate forgiveness to provide us all with a desire to do the best we can, and yes I'm crying as I write this review. I've just ordered a new copy as my other one is very dog eared.

. Mein Kampf
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Adolf Hitler
November 21, 2007
i stopped reading this book about a quarter of the way into it. i got extremely tired of the repetitive points..i know this is a way to emphasise something, but they seem a tad unneccesary if you know what hitler was all about already (obviously when this book was written, not so much). i also got tired of how poorly written it was...it seems like very often his point becomes lost, as if his attention span is that of a hyperactive child (which makes sense in re-iterating my last point.)
obviously this book is intersting just as prying into the mind of jeffrey dahmer is interesting, but these writings, like his paintings, are just plain artless. his inability to write well, combined with his inability to paint were quite likely part reasons ... Read More:

. Hitler's Empire: Nazi Rule in Occupied Europe (Allen Lane History)
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Mark Mazower

It's easy to work out if you'll like this book. The subject is, how did Nazi Germany administer and rule the countries they conquered and annexed? If you're already rolling your eyes and struggling to keep a yawn down, then clearly this book is not for you. On the other hand, if like me, you think, "wow, what an interesting subject," then you will probably like this book, and it should fulfil your expectations with ease. I only skipped about four pages about France's art scene and underground politics, and a page at the end that waffled on about the post war economy, so it's not a dull difficult to read book.
It goes into a fair amount of detail of how each country was handled differently. Eastern countries like Russia and Poland (the ... Read More:

. Bomber Boys: Fighting Back 1940-1945
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Patrick Bishop
May 23, 2008
This book is the best book I have read so far this year.
It describes the strategic air war against Germany by the RAF in the Second World War. That description makes it sound maybe a bit dry and academic but it is far from being either of those things! It tells the story of this chapter in the war from a very human point of view. For example, there are chapters describing the airmen's training, lives at their bases, their motivation, how they dealt with the fear of being killed whilst carrying out operation over Europe at night and many other highly interesting aspects of the lives of these remarkable men.
The book also describes the strategy behind the bombing of Germany, from the beginning to the end of the war and gives ... Read More:

. Eyewitness Auschwitz: Three Years in the Gas Chamber
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Filip Muller
1999-10
Truly the worst holocaust testimony ever written. So many mistakes throughout the whole text. Two examples of which were when Mr Muller mentions the camp orchestra in Birkenau, there was none.He also quotes that Kramer was in Birkenau and had came from Auschwitz 2.Both are one and the same place But important errors like these were repeated in every chapter and the worry for me is that Holocaust deniers may pick up on these simple blunders.Mr Mullers over use of adjectives and repetition of statements at times resulted in the book bordering on being boring. It read more like a students written essay who wasnt fully informed ,rather than an actual Holocaust survivors memoirs.Ive read many more imformative Holocaust testimonies and even Mr Muller must have been disappointed with the finished ... . A History of Modern Britain
City Travel Guides > Books > World History
by: Andrew Marr
May 17, 2007
Andrew Marr's 'History of Modern Britain' is a real tour de force - readable, entertaining and informative. The scholarship is obvious, but never detracts from the narrative. Marr covers all aspects of British history - economic, foreign relations, social - but always makes you feel you're following the narrative thread from 'then' to 'now': where we are now 'belongs'. Yet he also lets you think about how differently things might have turned out if some other set of circumstances had prevailed.
Excellent book, 'marred' (forgive the pun) only by sloppy editing, with frequent spelling mistakes and incorrect commas.
