This is the last book in the series charting the life of Julius Caesar. I found them all very readable and very enjoyable. Perhaps falling a little short of Colleen McCullough's Roman series of books, but there is no shame in that and these books are extremely enjoyable.

Much has been written about Julius Caesar, but like all great men he had his Achilles heel, in more ways than one. Although history portrays him as a very fair minded man, much loved by his soldiers and the common people. He had a terrible temper, which could be vented at any time and woe betide anyone who was in close proximity when this happened. I am always a little reluctant to buy books that claim to be a "new history" of events that were well recorded and happened some 370 years ago. English history lacks bite, a dull procession of uninspired monarchs and a frenzy of Empire building. The Civil War seemed more a squabble, relatively small armies and minor engagements. Brought up in the West Country, the ruins of Corfe Castle and siege at Sherborne vaguely linked me to Cromwell, the man with warts, with no more than a hazy school history to call on.

This book is an excellent introduction to this complicated culture war in which the defenders of property, religion and tradition took up arms against a Republican government committed to social reform, devolution and secularisation.

In the early 1930s the Republican government had begun with modest reforms aimed at improving the lot of the country's poor. However, even as early as 1931, the Constituent Assembly approved an amended draft that, while creating a democratic, secular system, also introduced measures which many Spanish people thought an irreligious assault on Spanish tradition. I'm not really a fan of history books. A 'C' in GCSE 15 years ago was good enough for me and I haven't exactly been at the front of the queue in the bookshops to pick up the latest historical offerings. To be honest, I only picked this book up in my local library on a wet Tuesday lunchtime because the local shop had sold out of newspapers; I never expected to get so caught up in it.

The way Purkiss writes is superb: it's like having a super-informed friend explain something to you in a language that is somewhere between typical history book prose and an almost knowing informality (speaking of a contemporary play she writes "It was about love. It was about faith. It was about four hours longer than the audience was used to.")

This is an in-depth and well argued book from a writer better known for other genres. My caveat to any reader is that Forsythe is shamelessly pro-Biafran and this is born out in his writing. I have no issue with writers having an opinion,but lets be clear of this from the outset. It's a book with lots of facts but for me, a little too much of 'he said in a private meeting which was unrecorded' type evidence rather than cold hard evidence. Read this book for an insight, but don't imagine it's wholly impartial.
