I feel i have to write in a retort to Jayetee's reveiw. The comments about the authour being rude and abusive, although being his/her personnel opinion should not stand.
I have recently laid the book down after what i can describe as one of the most moving accounts that i have ever digested.
Mark Eyles-Thomas served with the Parachute Regiment, calling all other members of the armed forces who did not earn the Maroon beret as HATS, is what is best described as banter, mickey taking and having a massive sense of self pride. What the Paras and other elite units do is not normal, these people are close, because of what they are asked to do; by people sat in their living rooms and cosy offices. This is an excellently written account of the under-publicised part played by RAF Harriers in the Falklands Campaign and is destined to be one of the definitive accounts of the Air War over the Falklands. It is a gripping read which describes vividly what it was like to fly a demanding aircraft in a demanding environment with none of the back-up which normally accompanied the Harrier Force in the field. It goes a long way to explain the great difficulties that had to be overcome in order to deliver air support to the land forces, and also why such things as re-attacks (strictly taboo by conventional wisdom) became a necessity. I don't normally do 5 stars so as I try to review this book, I will try to explain what makes it (in my eyes) so special.

Written in chronological order from before the start of the Falklands War this is a number of eye witness accounts so the perspective varies. This perspective is balanced with civilians and Argentines so all aspects of the conflict are presented.

I had a view of the Falklands war and specifically of the sinking of the Belgrano and I have to admit that I have changed my view upon reading this. I also learnt a great deal that I was not expecting to. Having seen an advance copy of this book, I can only compliment Jon Cooksey on the accuracy of 99% of the content.

Reading some of the comments from the contributors, one can only imagine the horror of war and the terrible aftermath of what must have been a truly bloody battle.

I believe this will soon become one of the 'Must have' books covering the Falklands campaign and Mount Longdon in particular.

As a retired sailor from the US Navy who has served on destroyers during the time of this story I wondered what modern warfare at sea was really like, this book tells that story. I alway wanted to know how modern electronic and weapon systems would really fare during a prolong battle at sea. What is was like at sea with the onset of winter and the toll it takes on men and ships.This book takes you on that journey at sea and what it was like day to day on a destroyer fighting not only the elements but the enemy during the Falklands War. Inskip does a very good job with this book and telling the story of the only ship to survive an Exocet missile attack. A must have for any Naval bookshelf.

It is fitting that I finished this book on the anniversary of the day the battle started. It is a soldier's story, by a member of 2 Para's patrols platoon.

This book concentrates solely on Geddes' experience of 2 Para's battle at Goose Green in 1982. He commanded a patrols section.

The book concentrates on their actions - the voyage down, to their battle.

It is good to read of the bravery and compassion of 2 Para's soldiers, to rescue their wounded comrades and take out the Argentine bunkers. In particular Geddes feels that a corporal, Dave Abols, turned the action in 2 Para's favour by working round to the machine-gun position which killed Colonel H, standing up in a hail of fire and firing an anti-tank rocket ... I've read a ton of Falklands histories/ memoirs etc. Some excellent (Sharkey Ward, Vulcan 607, Max Hastings etc) and some not so good. At first glance (ie when I ordered it for myself for Christmas off here) I thought this would at best be readable, and worse case a reference book for the shelf. I have to say I was totally wrong. This is an absolute little gem. Really readable, lots of detail that doesn't get too bogged down in itself, and lots and lots of anecdotes from those that took part. Its very well put together and reminds in some respects of the Martin Middlebrook approach which more often that not makes for a pretty good read.
Recommended.

An excellent read - takes away some of the obscurity of the time and the research is great. Finding out what happened on the "other side" of some incidents is quite compelling. Highly recommended.

As an Anglo-Argentine, I am always keen to understand why two staunch historical allies can be so at odds over two small islands. This book is probably the most balanced, educational and compelling read on this subject matter bar meeting with actual former soldiers from both sides. A must-read for anyone interested in or researching this war.
