. Dear Mom: a Sniper's Vietnam
City Travel Guides > Books > Vietnam War
by: Joseph T. Ward
1991-10
having read a few books about the vietnam war. this book is a great read, it makes you want to keep reading until you have finished. the beginning of the book is a bit slow in the marine core training camp, but it gives you an interesting insight. the rest of the book is fantastic, you can almost imagine being there and sniping yourself. the style is also refreshing, you read a letter home to his mom, then he tells the story about what actually happened and you realise all the parts he omitted, and the horrors that no one would be able to send home to their mom in a letter.
so summing up excellent read just buy it, you wont be dissapointed.

. Sog: The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam
City Travel Guides > Books > Vietnam War
by: John Plaster
1998-07
firstly, just buy this book and read it you will not be dissapointed.
this book details many missions that the sog went on during the vietnam war, and one thing that gets you almost immediately was the sheer loss of life that these units experienced. the missions they went on were virtual suicide missions. they knew they would have contact with the enemy as soon as they had been inserted, they knew there was a mole in saigon relaying their mission details to hanoi, and they knew they would be persued constantly while they were in cambodia and laos, yet they still went on the missions. this book is gripping, if you can cope with the many deaths described in the book.
excellent read, not glorified or gung ho at all.

. Blood Trails: The Combat Diary of a Foot Soldier in Vietnam
City Travel Guides > Books > Vietnam War
by: Christopher Ronnau
October 15, 2006
This book is, in my view, a laymans educational diary re the events of 1967 (hope that date is correct). An easy read with a sobering dose of reality. The author gives what appears to me, to be a 'normal' persons view of the conflict, too young to fully understand the enormity of the risk he was taking, Christopher Ronnau plunged himself into the depths of one of the most horrific situations a person can face and by sheer chance emerged alive, if only just, at the other side. Take this book on holiday, on the train, or to bed for an hour each night, but find the time to read it; it won't change your life, but may alter some of your preconceived views, if only a little. The book itself is a mass print production and as such is not best bound, if ... Read More:

. When Thunder Rolled: An F-105 Pilot Over North Vietnam
City Travel Guides > Books > Vietnam War
by: Ed Rasimus
September 28, 2004
(This review also applies to the author's subsequent book "Palace Cobra")
I am not a pilot but have always been interested in military aviation and aviation history. I've read many accounts of the exploits of air force pilots in numerous conflicts; what makes this book stand out is first the author's ability to write in a lucid and entertaining manner, but more importantly his presentation, whether it is intended or not, of himself as essentially a regular guy. Col Rasimus is without a doubt an authentic hero, a courageous man and a very talented pilot, but this is what the reader concludes - the author doesnt emphasise it or imply it. Instead, in the first book there is much talk about his fear ahead of going into action for the first time ... Read More:

. Blackjack 34
City Travel Guides > Books > Vietnam War
by: James Donahue
2000-04
Green Beret Staff Sergant Donahu served as a medic with a 12-man A-Team sent to Vietnam in 1966. In 1967, when he should have returned Stateside, this career Marine volunteered to join the newly coceived Mobile Gurrilla Force, extending his tour of duty by six months to do so. This book gives account of an operation on just one day, 18th July 1967, when the hunters became the hunted and Vietcong attacked Donahue's patrol. It is a gripping story, made all more redable by the author's superb descriptive style of both events and participants. A no-nonsense book that brings home the full horror of Vietnam without the gung-ho attitude portrayed by Hollywood.

. Chickenhawk
City Travel Guides > Books > Vietnam War
by: Robert Mason
March 18, 2005
Chickenhawk has to be not only the best Vietnam War book, but also the best helicopter book.
I read this book in a matter of hours, I just couldn't put it down. Mason describes the situations with such clarity that you can almost shut your eyes and feel the thumps of the rotor blades as you follow his encounters into hastily-prepared landing zones and you feel his horror at having to switch from transports to gunships. It certainly makes you respect the intricacies of piloting rotorcraft.
If you're an aviation nut, or just enjoy reading you simply must read this book before you die.
