City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire
.Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire
City Travel Guides > Books > Social and Economic History
by: Amanda Foreman

June 07, 1999
Although 'Georgiana' is competently written and well-researched, I am frankly amazed that it has achieved such massive success and popularity since its first publication ten years ago. As other reviewers have pointed out, it perhaps fulfills a useful purpose in putting women back in the 'front-line' of the eighteenth-century political scene but, speaking for myself, I found the exhaustive discussion of the ups-and-downs of the Whigs and Tories tedious in the extreme and an almost total turn-off. This was doubly disappointing, since the rave reviews had led me to expect so much more.

Strangely enough, the most engaging part of the book was the introduction, in which the author writes with real verve and enthusiasm of how she was ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Great Crash, 1929 (Penguin business)
.The Great Crash, 1929 (Penguin business)
City Travel Guides > Books > Social and Economic History
by: John Kenneth Galbraith

October 29, 1992
I found this book captivating, in a "gallows humor" sort of way.

Although written many years ago, and recounting events in the distant past, it should be required reading for anyone in the markets today. More specifically, it should have been required reading a year ago (mid 2007) for those invested in finance and property sectors.

Whether the malaise in those sectors (some stocks down 90%) spreads eventually to the general indexes remains to be seen.

.Tommy's War: A First World War Diary 1913-1918
City Travel Guides > Books > Social and Economic History
by: Thomas Cairns Livingstone

September 15, 2008
This book is a delight, a gem. The original illustrations take the diaries beyond the mundane, and Thomas Livingstone's gentle humour enlivens the often dreary weather and seemingly constant worries over Agnes health. Zeplins, Chimneys, the wash house, news from the front, the ironing, the cost of coal..... all of life is here. You will love it!

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : London: The Biography
.London: The Biography
City Travel Guides > Books > Social and Economic History
by: Peter Ackroyd

August 21, 2008
Rambling, unfocused, poorly researched, and little real history. An enjoyable holiday read perhaps, but those looking to learn about the origins of this great city should look elsewhere. Most of the discussion centers on the 17th and 18th centuries and most of the anecdotes come from only two souces. The author could have taken the trouble to do a little more research! Very disappointing.

I read about this case in the newspapers , so when I saw this book being advertised, I knew I had to buy it and see if the foster mother, was as evil as they made out.
And yes she is, my only dissapointment was that she only got 14 years in prison. She should have been hung !!! pity the death sentance is no longer used !
Good Luck to Chris, Karen and Lulu in whatever you do. x

Stunning read. Yorkshires answer to Gone With the Wind, except its a true story. You could not make up a story like this it has enthraled everyone who has read it in our family and friends. Supprised it has never been made into a film on television series.Would outshine Brideshead Revisited.

I am a social work student and I purchased this book at the beginning of my degree. It is very informative as to how social work began in this country. The information contained within the book is readable and set out in such a way that its easy to comprehend when you are just starting out on a degree. I thoroughly recommend this book.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Stranger in the House: Women's Stories of Men Returning from the Second World War
.Stranger in the House: Women's Stories of Men Returning from the Second World War
City Travel Guides > Books > Social and Economic History
by: Julie Summers

September 01, 2008
One of Julie Summer's strengths as a biographer is her capacity to allow her subjects to speak for themselves - but at the same time, throughout this fine book, the reader always has a reassuring sense of the author's guiding hand.
These stories of the women so directly affected by the last war are often deeply moving, full of their humanity and strength. The author successfully conveys the complexity of their feelings, the ambivalence felt by many of these women - glad to have their menfolk back home, and yet reluctant to give up the hard-fought-for freedom and independence they had gained during the war years.
The depth and quality of research is never in question, allowing the reader to feel safe in the author's hands. The chapter on the Army Postal Service, ... Read More:

by: Virginia Nicholson

June 05, 2008
As Virginia Nicholson righly points out, many of the women left without men following WW1 were often forgotton about or viewed as a problem. Ms Nicholson has done a wonderful job of describing both the achievements of these women and the prejudices they faced. The book is extremely well-researched - the author has sought out survivors of this period, and reached into diaries, letters, news reports, literature, problem pages, etc.

However, the book feels like a missed opportunity. The women's stories are rarely accompanied by any critical analysis or historical background - the book often descends into hero worship. I would have also appreciated biographies of some of the key individuals in the book.

This book is certainly worth reading for anyone interested ... Read More:

I bought this book after reading a serialisation in a paper, and found it a really fascinating read. Everything from prostitution to guns to drugs to cyber crime to diamonds to people trafficking is covered in a wide ranging examination of the globalised nature of the black market, and its enormous influence on society and politics.
