This book was interesting from the depth of research about the period he was writing about would almost be a 5/5.

Unfortunately for me, the book was let down by its story line. The characters were poorly developed, at times aspect of the story line was fantastical, and bore minimal regard to realitiy and a lack of depth. A little staid the story is 3/5.

It didn't captivate. A shame, as it was set in an intersting time, with lots to play with :(

A border line 4/5 only for the historical aspects.

As with everything which happens in real history there is a spiritual basis to those crusades, and a philosophical explanation. History is philosophical, not factual. Because he ignores this, Tyreman is confused about why the various nobles and people left their homes to go on the crusade.

At the heart of Western life at the time of the First Crusade was the Mass, a ritual which is still perfomred today, and is still at the heart of Christian practice. It's purpose was to transport every Christian into God's love, and to the time when God was on earth, in Jerusalem.

First off, it is important to note that Runciman's work (now over 50 years old) has by and large been superseded by more recent scholarship - in particular that of Jonathan Riley-Smith. Runciman views the Crusades as the last of the 'Barbarian Invasions' and his work often reads more like a threnody for the declining Byzantine Empire than a self-consciously 'objective' account of events. For a more up-to-date (though drier) general history, you would be better off reading Christopher Tyerman's new 'God's War.'

However, it is still more than possible to read and enjoy 'A History of the Crusades' for what it is - an epic account of three hundred years of history, and an energetic demolition of the view (sadly still prevalent in some circles) ... Read More:

This is the first book that I have seen that covers the monastic dress of the first brothers-at-arms of the Order of the Hospital of St John at Jerusalem. All the full coloured drawings are of fantastic detail and bring to life the appearance of these fighting monks. For everyone interested in the Knights Hospitaller, this is one book that you MUST have in your collection.

With the recent crusades of Bush, Blair and company it is fashionable to look back at the medieval crusades with a revisionist eye. David Miller does not fall into this trap seeing King Richard's crusade as practical mission to secure access to Jerusalem for western pilgrims. A right they had enjoyed until the Turkoman invasions of the 11th Century.

Miller sets out the history then admirably describes Richard's brilliant military campaign. To put together such a large operation in hostile territory thousands of miles from home was a feat of genius. If you want to be taken to the heart of Richard's campaign, without bleeding heart liberal moralizing this is the book.
