Overall I enjoyed this book, I began reading it with little to no knowledge of the subject and came out with a reasonable understanding of the war. The book is on the whole very readable which is quite an achievement considering the nature of the war - a long drawn out affair with a lack of decisive battles. There are a couple of reasons for this, firstly excellent use is made of eyewitness accounts which combined with photographs (I believe this was one of, if not the earliest wars where a photographer was present) bring the rather dismal campaign to life. Secondly the author holds nothing back in delivering a scathing portrayal of the officers (particularly those of the British) and the numerous tactical blunders made by both sides which is ... Any one who has an interest in the Crimean War this book is a must, it is well written and keeps you interested and wanting to know more with out getting bogged down with technical detail. It not only gives you the allies' side but the Russians too. At times it felt as though I was reading an account of a First World War battle. Was this a foretaste of what was to happen 60 years later? It makes you realize that bravery is not just one sided. Thoroughly good read.

I found this book to be an excellent read on a subject rarely tackled. Not since Following The Drum by Brigadier Page in 1986 (covering the Peninsular War)have I seen a work of this standard, with its exceptional detailed research which probes the lives of the simple camp followers as well as the well-heeled good and the great of all nations involved. I like also the accuracy of dates and events of the campaign, an aspect which I have found to be lacking in many recent publications. This book will appeal to a very wide range of readers and not just students of 19th century conflicts.

The publishers blurb promises that the book won't cover the same old ground and that is certainly true. More time is spent on the Tsar's visit to Britain in 1844 (ten years before the outbreak of war) than on the whole of the battle of Balaklava let alone the Charge of the Light Brigade, and Florence Nightingale is only mentioned in passing. However, Troubetzkoy, wisely assuming some preknowledge of the better known aspects of the conflict, delivers on the promise of the series subtitle. He explains the drift to war, covers the lesser known theatres of the Danube, Baltic and Kamchatka and doesn't fail to highlight the pointlessness of it all.

The Crimean War seems to be synonymous with the Charge of the Light Brigade and the futile attempt of courageous soldiers to fight on distant fields for an unnecessary cause (like the common perception of WW1!) This book, although short does a good job of dispelling some of those myths by the use of reports and letters from people who were actually at the battles.

The result is a book that is refreshing, factual, and balanced. Where mistakes were made, they were examined, and alternatives provided. Of course many of the mistakes can be traced back to previous ones, and these (such as the problems with cholera) were not that unusual at the time. If you are considering purchasing just one volume on the Crimean War, I am sure this very reasonably priced re-print of the highly successful classic masterpiece will more than meet your requirements. Although there have been several much larger and more detailed volumes published to date, this one is without a doubt one of the easiest to read, whilst being sufficiently authoritative enough at the same time.
