Highly informative and entertaining account of the personal experiences of an ordinary soldier of the peninsular wars. A rare personal account of the lower ranks due to a lack of literacy at that time.

Very simple review - how can you take an 'academic' work seriously when it can't even be consistent with its spelling between the index and the main text? If you want a single volume history of the Peninsular War, get David Gates' excellent Spanish Ulcer instead.

I dug out this book, purchased a few years ago when I last visited Portugal, for another visit this summer.

This book is an excellent history of the design and building of the Lines, the campaign waged in front of them in 1810-11, including the battle of Busaco and the skirmish at Sobral in October 1810, the one time that the French Army tested the defences, albeit tentatively, and the political and strategic ramifications. In his conclusion Grehan laments the fact that military men failed to appreciate that the Lines demonstrated that defence could be the basis of achieving a strategic victory, and that had the commanders of the first world war realised this - he quotes Marshal Foch, who stated "the offensive form must always be adopted" - then ... Mr. Fraser has produced a comprehensive, well-researched and eminently readable book of a war previously known mainly from the viewpoints of the main protagonists. To have such a detailed account in English seen from perspective of the Spanish population is a unique achievement. The writer's extensive knowledge of Spanish history makes this book a pleasure to read for anyone interested in the history of the country, with several themes being relevant to more recent times and events.

This book is superb. Clear, concise, detailed, authoritative, all those things you want to hear. Don't waist time listening to me, it's a must have history from the British perspective. Quite stirring when the 57th get plastered at Albuera I'll say. Definitely one of the best I have read on this subject area. Can't believe you can pick it up so cheaply as it is so superior to much more expensive works. If you are a Peninsular era fan get it, you certainly won't be disappointed.

Numerous editions of this classic memoir exist; mostly all abridged. The publishers have done an excellent job here by provided Recollections of Rifleman Harris completely unabridged and unedited. The only liberty taken with the text is the establishment of chapters for clarity and ease. Also included is a 1928 introduction by Sir John Fortescue which neatly summarises the history of the 95th Rifles.

Rifleman Harris was not long in the Peninsular War and most of his days of soldiering were occupied in lengthy marching and sickness. He was present at only two set-piece battles (Rolica and Vimeiro) and was involved in Moore's Retreat to Corunna and the disastrous Walcheren Expedition. Sir Charles Oman's History is reasonalby un-biased for a Britsh Historian, esp. compared to Napiers work on the same topic.

Full of orders of battle, losses, maps and other vital information to historians and wargamers alike these books are a must for any serious student of the Peninsular War.
