. Goodbye Rhodesia
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Chris Mears
November 01, 2005
Chris Mears' account of what it was like to be a white economic immigrant to what was then called Rhodesia in the 1950s, is far removed from the usual colonial clichés of servants and sundowners round the pool - not least because she is a vegetarian in a country that likes a good braai. She takes us from her arrival in an abandoned RAF camp, starting as a government clerk, through marriage to tobacco farmer Martin and the hard graft of bringing up a family whilst living in a remote part of Southern Rhodesia. Their life is tough, bush fires common and money scarce but they are enchanted by life on their farm, particularly its wildlife. At one time a Nile monitor lizard lives in their roof. `The first we saw of him was a very large clawed foot ... Read More:

. Cameroon with Egbert
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Dervla Murphy
November 15, 1999
Murphy triumphs again with a refreshing outlook on an otherwise little known about west African country. A desire to traverse the breadth of Cameroon, jungle, highlands and all, with just enough pre-planning to make it possible, the indisputably female Murphy travels from village to village with her daughter and Egbert, a local horse of a certain resilience. Sometimes relying on local beer for breakfast, always relying on Egbert, a well detailed account unfolds portraying beautifully life in the bush of a country whose ego is some way ahead of reality for the vast majority. There are nice descriptions of what are essentially typical mud-hut villages, with plenty of local contact to provide a good insight as to what these people do with their lives, ... Read More:

. Kenya (Globetrotter Safari Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Dave Richards, Val Richards
September 28, 2007
I honestly enjoyed reading Lost Oasis. It comes across as a small traveller's notebook, yet it's stuffed full of colourful incident and observation. This does not take you away from the readiness and reality of each part of Twigger's journey and various "Starts"!
His journey starts with a move of family and life from England to Cairo and the boundless promise of the Desert. Here begins a light-hearted search for a fabulous and factual "Lost Oasis" within the vast Sahara.
I come away from reading this book a little more interested in Egypt but also really excited at the potential for my next travels. A big recommendation for Lost Oasis and the stories I discovered in this excellent travel book.

. Philip's Star Chart N/E (Philips Star Chart)
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
from: Philip's
January 27, 2003
I visited Eritrea for 10days, and the Bradt Guide has been invaluable to gain knowledge and understanding of the fascinating culture of this country and its people. Moreover the author has done a wonderful job in depicting the warmth and hospitality of the people of Eritrea and I was lucky enough to experience it myself.
I will certainly consider buying Bradt guides from now now. The Eritrea guide provided me with information on the country that goes in much more depth then "places to visit", "where to stay" and "where to eat" etc. A valuable read that goes beyond a touristic necessity.
I hope to return to Eritrea soon and I will certainly bring my trusted Bradt guide with me wherever I will go.
