I have bought this book from Amazon twice to give as a present. Now I think I might have to get myself a copy. It is full of page after page of clear, full colour photographs of African wildlife.

This book is recommended by Lonely Planet so I bought it before setting off to Morocco last month. While using their recommendations to find places to stay and things to do, I kept reading the stories as I went along and found myself more in tune with the people around me. The stories gave me a sense of reality and honesty, as well as a sense of humour that is vital while travelling.

As a twelve-year foreign resident of Marrakesh, I read with interest this slim volume in about two hours. Before reading, I thought this was something written in the past 20 years. But I quickly discovered that the author's sejour in Morocco must have occurred in about 1959 (according to my Moroccan husband) due to certain events mentioned. (The book was first published in 1967.)

The book takes place in the time when Morocco was still part of the French Colonial Empire, and when the French had placed a "puppet" sultan on the throne. The author speaks of camel markets in Bab Khemis, the camels having walked in a train of 105 animals from the Western Sahara. I remember in the 1960's reading the original books (2 volumes) that were published by Howard Carter not long after he had finished cataloguing the extraordinary finds from the tomb. Although all the photographs were in black and white they showed beautiful objects, the like of which had never been seen before and promoted a "Tutankhamun fever". This passion for all things Egyptian influenced interior decoration and even the architecture of the time. It is easy to understand why people were so passionate. These were objects that also increased my own love of the history of the Ancient Egyptians. It also aroused my interest in deciphering and understanding hieroglyphics.

I was fascinated by this book. It looks at the attitudes of people who have weathered the storm of independence in ex-colonies. As someone who is visiting Africa for the first time, I am intrigued by the people, politics and history of this continent, and this book echoed much of what I have learnt. A thoroughly good read.

I have lived in Nigeria now for over seven years and I met Lizzie when she came to Lagos to write the book. Within the space of a few weeks, Lizzie has come to understand Nigeria and the Nigerian people in a way that many long term residents have not. Time and time again I found myself recognising places and situations exactly as I had experienced them. She writes with great empathy for her subject and tells it as it is, the good and the bad. I showed it to a couple of my Nigerian friends and they loved it, agreeing with almost all Lizzie had to say. This book is quite simply a must for anyone living in or visiting Nigeria, as well as being a cracking good read.

Sahara by and large is a good but it dose get very repetitive. Palin in one of the best descriptive writes i know and you get a good fell for the country's.

Its just such a shame that its so respective and not in the slights bit addictive. Morocco is a good start but after Mauritania, and Senegal you just get fed up and want to read something else.Also missing out Egypt was a bit mistake. New Europe's a lot better. Only read this if are into travel books.
