Well written and funny in places, but not that dissimilar to other books in this genre.

Whenever I am going on holiday, one of the most exciting things for me is buying the rough guide before we go. On the rare occasion that I haven't done this i've felt I've gone into things blind and not taken the best choices in terms of trips etc.

This rough guide did prove invaluable on our trip to Sharm el Sheik and a day trip to Cairo, however the one thing I would question, and I find this is generally the case with Rough Guides, is that the prices quoted for meals and, in this case especially, taxis is often way out. We travelled only a month after this book was published, so I would expect it to be much more up to date than it was.

Forget the tourist uniform of backpack and Lonely Planet/Rough Guide in hand.... you're going to need both hands to carry all the 'bargains' that the salesmen of Marrakech have so considerately helped you spend your money on!

This is a tremendous little guidebook to carry in your pocket as you wander round Marrakech.
The old Medina is a rabbit-warren of alleyways (you WILL get lost, so enjoy the experience!), so to have a well thought out little book like this on you is a real help. It is just the right size (and weight!) to slip into the leg pocket of your combat trousers or back pocket of your jeans, and has just enough practical information about sights of interest, shopping, restaurants etc etc, to keep you busy. I bought this book when i first booked my holiday. Read it and put it to one side. Remembered to pack it but didn't look at it again. On the way home (14 February 2008) i remembered i had it and reread it...........my goodness this lady was on our cruise ship! Absolutely everything she said happened and her tips on fighting off the persistant sellers were spot-on!!! I would TOTALLY recommend this book if you are considering a Nile cruise - but don't do what i did - buy it, read it, and take her at her word - everything she says is true. Have a fantastic holiday!

This map is an absolute must for anyone going to Marrakech. I recently went and not only would have been totally lost without it, but would have missed out on some of the treasures Marrakech has to offer. Street names are a rarity but this map makes up for the lack of them by being absolutely perfect - even through the maze of the souqs! Without it i may have had to resort to pay a few dirham to be guided by locals who either take you on a roundabout route to where you want to be, normally via their cousins tannery, or send you in completely the wrong direction and laugh at you as you go. Buy it before you leave or suffer the consequences!

I am surprised at the negative feedback here. As a consistent user of Lonely Planet guides, I have to say that this ranked as one of the more useful country guides i have come across. Writing guidebooks must be a very tricky business - it is necessary to include such a vast quantity of information, while trying simultaneously to capture the feel and mood of a country in such a way that people know what to expect back home. This particular guide does an excellent job in this respect.

I spent one month travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town, taking a winding route through Swaziland and Lesotho. I had no schedule and went where I wanted when I wanted. And perhaps it is for this kind of travelling that this guide is most suitable - it doesn't ... Read More:

This is an excellent little book. Don't be misled by its diminuitive size it is a 'Tardis' of information, words and phrases. Instantly usable by beginners and the more experienced foreigner to Arabic alike. Very good value for money.

This paperback with 353 pages has a large colour map on pages 4-5. The first few pages deals with getting started. Then the book goes on to the history,culture, environment, safaris and the Tanzanian wildlife. There is a chapter on food and drink.
The book then moves on to different areas of Tanzania. You need to decide where you are going and then concentrate on that chapter. Once decided, log on to internet and check the lodges, roads and maps. The internet gives you lodges and camps in detail with photos.
The last chapters in the book deal with, transport, health, language and do's and don'ts. These are a must read. There are beautiful colour photos, maps and street maps through out the book.
