This book's a reasonable guide, but is eclipsed by the brilliantly written and hugely informative Bradt Guide. We took both books to Ethiopia (09/2006) and found the Bradt one to be far superior.

Too many reviewers here want a glowing travel brochure out of Theroux. Writing is his vocation, travelling is his muse. Travelling is a way to comment on the human condition as he experiences it, and on his own condition, as he experiences it. It doesn't matter how many people have a good time in Africa, or a bad time in Africa - Theroux has his own devil driving him in his own strange directions, and what he produces are travel books only in the most minimal sense. In the larger sense they are works of literature in which travel plays a part.

I love the complexity of his writing, his honesty in recording moods, enthusiasms, fears, vanities, moments of ill-temper, generosity, meanness. Reviewers point out moments of 'hypocrisy', ... Read More:

a guide to each country in africa, with countey map, photos, basic info.

This book is excellent education material, but if you are just off for you holidays its a little too much, for the AVERAGE traveller, most of the relevant information can be retrieved off sites on the net. Shame there is no real travel guide yet only this as such.

cultural diversity of Morocco and a sympathetic portrayal of the local characters makes this book stand out from the others about buying a house in Morocco. As an anthropologist I appreciate these factors, and I learned more about Morocco than I did from reading other books about doing up a house there which seem superficial in comparison. In my book Travelling Magically: How to Turn Your Journey into a Life-changing Experience I discuss how important sensitivity to the local culture is - this book is an excellent example.
