Amitav Ghosh is an author par excellence...The Glass House and Hungry Tide (if one sees the BBC Documentary on Ganges, it would go hand in hand with Hungry Tide):his command and portrayal in English is simply superb. Whatever prompted him to go to Egypt and write this in depth historical portrayal alongwith an interesting account of Egyptian village life ..this would surely be interesting to know...This book needed time and one needed to be attentive..its certainly not the kind of absorbing reading as with Glass Palace or Hungry Tide....but was nevertheless interesting for me to take it on a long distance flight...this would appeal to anyone interested in the connections between Jewish History, India and Egypt...there was a thriving Jewish community ... This is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in Morocco.This book is about two foreigners who decide to buy an old house in the medina in Fez and bring it back to its former glory. The author uses her knowledge of Moroccan culture and history as she writes. She is honest but not condesending. She writes about the people she meets along the way. I read it before I went back to Morocco and it made me very keen to go back. I would love to read more from this author.

Having visited Madagascar several times in recent years Ive used a number of guide books so I was eager to see what this new edition of the Lonely Planet Madagascar & Comoros guide book is like.

Perhaps its main advantage is its size. Its pretty small, so if baggage space is at a real premium this could be an advantage for you. However the small size comes at a cost - much of the information is not very detailed. Its largely the sort of information you might easily find out yourself travelling without a guidebook. And remember, a quarter of this book is about the Comoros - not useful if you're only going to Madagascar.

This is a superb book that contains all of the relevant material to ensure you have the best possible chance of reaching the summit of Kili. Tailored so as to be useful to experienced trekkers and those new to the pursuit, this book was invaluable on our trip. Packed with pre-departure tips and advice it ensured that we left fully prepared and aware of what awaited us. Useful information regarding each of the routes and contact details of agencies in the UK and Tanzania mean you can book in advance and do so safely. Once on the mountain the day-by-day descriptions of the routes are clear and concise and the mapping provided is excellent. Having spent a fair amount of time in Namibia we have collected almost every guide book there is and I have to say this is the one we use most. I like the layout more than the others and it is generally more informative and more up to date. A good all round guide book to this amazing country.

Having read, and loved the White Masai, in just a couple of days, I was looking greatly forward to this follow up book. Having rushed out to buy it as soon as it was published, I read in as soon as I could. However, I was most dissapointed. My thoughts echo the review previous to mine. I felt that the information in this book was minimal and lacked detail or depth. It seems like a half hearted attempt of a book with no interest built up at all. Every chapter is short, lasting only a few pages, which to be honest were uninteresting and in places down right boring. Compared to the first book which was full of detail, depth, emotion and character, this book has nothing. I did finish the book to see it through, but would not think of ever picking it ...
