. The Perfect Christmas
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)
by: Anthea Turner

The look of this book and the premise behind (and the other reviews!) convinced me to buy it. And I am (frankly) a little disappointed. If this was the first Christmas that you were putting together then I can see the appeal, but I can't say that it's really inspired me. Many of the suggestions are, quite honestly, a little obvious. Maybe that is what this book is about, and I've missed the point - I wanted pages of gorgeousness sprinkled with lots of ideas for Christmas. Anthea has included numerous projects, very few of which inspire me (putting your old glittery brooches on the Christmas tree when you've run out of decorations). Her recipes aren't up to patch of someone like Nigella Lawson (and neither would I expect them to be), and ... Read More:

. The Northern Clemency
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)

This huge, sprawling novel has left me breathless. Quite an amazing read. The simple, economical style leads you through this cast of characters with such clarity and such honesty that I was very sorry to finish the book and have to try to finding something to fill its place.
A quite stunning piece of story telling, unlike anything I've read before and a stand out book that, should there be justice, deservedly win the Man Booker.
Don't let the the length and the 'literary' label put you off. Give this book a go and let yourself be immersed by a writer who can truly hook you into fiction.

. The Study Skills Handbook (Palgrave Study Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)
by: Stella Cottrell

I am a mature student and was advised to buy this when I started my Access to HE course many years ago. I dutifully went and bought it alongside The Good Study Guide by Andrew Northedge and I have to say that this book is worth its weight in gold compared to the book by Northedge. This is not a comparison so I shall move on to say that every aspect of study - whether its organizing your time, planning backwards from deadlines, learning how you study best or even looking at personal development is covered in this excellent resource. It is designed in a user-friendly way which allows you to either read it all the way through or dip in and out of it depending on your needs. The book is designed in a clever way with charts, pictures, examples etc and it's glittered ... . Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)
by: Amanda Foreman

Although 'Georgiana' is competently written and well-researched, I am frankly amazed that it has achieved such massive success and popularity since its first publication ten years ago. As other reviewers have pointed out, it perhaps fulfills a useful purpose in putting women back in the 'front-line' of the eighteenth-century political scene but, speaking for myself, I found the exhaustive discussion of the ups-and-downs of the Whigs and Tories tedious in the extreme and an almost total turn-off. This was doubly disappointing, since the rave reviews had led me to expect so much more.
Strangely enough, the most engaging part of the book was the introduction, in which the author writes with real verve and enthusiasm of how she was first 'introduced' to the duchess ... Read More:

. The Pillars of the Earth
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)
by: Ken Follett
April 06, 2007
The strength of the book is the detailed description of the development of a cathedral and its impact on the prosperity of a town through a page-turning narrative and fictional characters. It is a fairly easy read on a difficult subject. It covers the civil war during the 12th century (Stephen and Maud) The downside is it is not a very memorable read. When my book club recommended it, I did not even remember I had aready done so! I certainly would not say don't read it - especially if you are doing GCSE architecture or medieval history. It does bring the period to life more than a textbook would and that can spur you on to learn more. However, it is not a great piece of historical fiction.

Favourite quote of the book: 'Give me my treasure back or I'll tell my mum'
This book is a firm favourite with my 5yo son - he loves the rhythm and the pace and most of all he loves the little girl pirates for NOT saying 'certainly not, you're only a boy'. I have bought lots of copies for little girls as an antidote to stories of soppy princesses, and had to make a complete Captain Patch costume for my son for World Book Day!
