. Acheron (Dark Hunter) (Dark Hunter)

Ash's story is hinted at throughout the other books and he finally gets his own book. The trouble with this book is that is it very, very long and the first part dealing with Ash's history and detailing his many and varies abuses is especially so. I understand the concept that the past shapes the present, but being exposed to every violent and horrific act perpetrated on Ash desinsitises the reader to the extent that you become inured to it almost. I simply can't understand why you would want to detail pages and pages of abuse, hammering your point home rather than allowing the reader a little breathign space.
Yes the first part of the book does hold all the valid information you will need to understand Ash but it is much too ... Read More:

. Down River
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)
by: John Hart
June 16, 2008
Often I read reviews on Amazon, where people have generally liked a novel, and there is one where the reviewer writes 'I must be missing something', or words to that effect. Well in the case of this novel, I must be that person, because I don't understand all the hype about it at all.
I just about forced myself to finish it as I was (just) interested enough to read the end, but only just. I kept thinking there must be some amazing twists in the plot to come, but they never arrived, and I had already realised what some of the outcomes were going to be earlier on in the book. This isn't a problem if the writing itself is stylish and the tale enthralling enough to keep one reading whether you have worked out the plot in advance or not, but in this ... Read More:

. Superior Saturday (The Keys to the Kingdom)
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)
by: Garth Nix
July 01, 2008
Having read and loved Garth Nix's OLD KINGDOM books (SABRIEL, LIRAEL, and ABHORSEN) as well as his SEVENTH TOWER series, I had pretty high expectations when I started in on SUPERIOR SATURDAY. I wasn't
disappointed. The action moves along quickly, with new and original presentations of magic at every turn, and major and minor characters worth cheering for (or, in the case of the antagonists, against).
The sixth book in Nix's KEYS TO THE KINGDOM series picks up right where the fifth book left off, making it a little confusing to understand at first, especially if you're a newcomer to the series, like I was when reading this. The book is certainly good enough to merit your going to the library and checking out all of the previous ones in order to get ... Read More:

. The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)
by: Eckhart Tolle
February 01, 2001
I read this book several years ago. Yes it is enthusiastic and easily accesible and very convincing BUT I don't believe it was written out of any profound knowledge nor from true enlightenment. I felt it was at best a simplified version of Krishnamurti's writings, which I may struggle with but find deeply insightful. So yes as an introduction to more sincere & profound spiritual writing it has it's place. Tolle does have a story to tell, but it is not that unique. There is a difference between simplification coming from deep wisdom and that from inexperience ( I guess the same can be said for more complicated texts too!) and knowledge truely lived and that which is just an exchange of words. Dissappointing considering all the hype, especially from circles, who in my opinion, should ... Read More:

. Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness
City Travel Guides > Books > Age (feature two browse-bin)
by: Richard H. Thaler, Cass R. Sunstein
May 13, 2008
In this lovely, useful book, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein examine choices, biases and the limits of human reasoning from a variety of perspectives. They often amuse by disclosing how they have fallen victim to the limitations of thought that they are describing. The fact that these educated, articulate professionals can fool themselves so often demonstrates how tough it is to think clearly, a point the authors emphasize and even repeat. Humans fall prey to systematic errors of judgment, but you can harness this problematic tendency productively, including by helping others make better decisions. Some of the authors' suggestions may not be practical, but many are and all are interesting. getAbstract recommends this book to anyone who wants to know how to shape responsible decisions.
