. Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World
City Travel Guides > Books > Air Travel
by: Joan Druett
June 08, 2007
During 1864, the `Grafton' and the `Invercauld' were shipwrecked in different locations on Auckland Island less than 20 miles (30 kilometres) from each other. The contrast between the actions taken by the two crews could not be greater.
Auckland Island is one of the subantarctic islands located about 300 miles (465 kilometres) south-east of New Zealand. By drawing on a range of sources, including the journals of Thomas Musgrave and Francois Raynal, Joan Druett depicts a tale of courage and survival on the part of the crew of the `Grafton'. All five of the crew on the `Grafton' survived the shipwreck, lived on the island for twenty months and were all rescued. Their resourcefulness and ability to work together as a team enabled ... . Somerset Coast from the Air
City Travel Guides > Books > Air Travel
by: Jason Hawkes
April 29, 2008
This is a very nice coffee-table type of book, containing some well-chosen photographs of the Somerset coast, stretching all the way from Portishead and Clevedon down to Minehead, Porlock and the fringes of Exmoor National Park. There is a nice balance between shots of natural features and pictures of the built environment and human activity, such as the docks at Avonmouth. The one let-down, though, is the typos in the picture captions, which are all too frequent. Surely, even in a book where the pictures predominate, better editing is called for - it's not as if there were acres of text to srutinise, just one-line captions beneath each picture. Let's hope the editing is more thorough for future books published in this series!

. The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland
City Travel Guides > Books > Air Travel
by: Jim DeFede
2002-09
This was an incredibly inspiring and thought provoking book. The kindness displayed by the population of Gander to so many people who were passengers on the planes that could not enter US air space is overwhelming. I was touched by many of the stories - Orthodox Jewish people, and the the story of the Jewish chap who had lived in Newfoundland since the War years and not told his wife he was Jewish, the lady who left complete strangers in her home to shower inviting them to rest and relax and to simply close the door when they left. The trust of the Newfoundlanders during a time filled with mistrust was amazing. Not to mention the story of the young couple bringing back to the US their adopted daughter and of course the couple whose son was a firefighter ... Read More:

. Reflections from Earth Orbit (Apogee Books Space)
City Travel Guides > Books > Air Travel
by: Captain Winston E Scott
2005-07
When I was on holiday with my family in Florida, we visited the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral. In the shop was Captain Winston Scott signing copies of his book. Which is where I bought my copy. I knew nothing about him at the time, but first impressions were of an intelligent and engaging man. The book is paperback and A4 size with many colour pictures. I just wish I had read the book before I met him, as I would have had better questions to ask him at the time.
The book jumps between his two space shuttle missions and his past which is ok, but I prefer to be able to read all about the missions in one go. And not have to wait for the anecdote to complete before we return to the mission. Overall a worthwhile read if a little short. ... Read More:
