All of the places where we stayed were well described and proved to deliver exactly what they promised. We found all of the owners accomodating and eager to please and all of the directions were clear and easy to follow. We stayed at one particularly grand "Domaine" in the Loire that was fantastic, with every detail attended to. Our favourite though was a small Chateau near Alencon which had been in the same family for 15 generations. The guests (all 12 of us!) dined together at the huge dining table in the magnificent dining hall and it was rather like attending a rather good dinner party each evening! .Pubs & Inns of England & Wales (Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay) City Travel Guides > Books > Alastair Sawday by: Alastair Sawday April 30, 2004 An avid user of Special Places to Stay (especially the Spain and British B&B guides), I was intrigued by their new pubs guide. It's everything that you'd expect from the other guides; interesting to browse through, easy to use and to find the right place (symbols, maps etc) and there seems to be a real emphasis on food which is what many of us look for in a good pub. Lots of child-friendly symbols which helps a lot with a young family. He just brought home this new Sawday's guide and I spent two hours lost in a dream world reading it. The comments, practical information, and insight into the cultural, made me want to get on a plane and go. There were wonderful descriptions of the different places to stay and photos that made each one look like a dream. The owners sounded like people I wanted to meet. All the accomodations sounded interesting, ranging from grand palaces to an old London bus parked in the desert. I wanted to stay at every place they listed just for the experience. .Special Places to Stay: Ireland City Travel Guides > Books > Alastair Sawday by: Alastair Sawday January 01, 2001 Having bought several B&B guides for a touring holiday of Ireland, we found this guide to be the most useful in terms of accurate descriptions, good directions and ease of use. We like our home comforts, but also like to find places with character, quirkiness and with friendly hosts. This guide took the guesswork out of the selection process. We stayed at 4 places within the guide and were more than delighted with every one. After browsing through I selected a few hotels and went on to their web sites to book. The hotel we stayed in was exactly as described in the book and we had a wonderful time. .Special Places to Stay: Spain City Travel Guides > Books > Alastair Sawday from: Alastair Sawday Publishing January 01, 2001 Special places to stay is an excellent companion to any journey around Spain, but it can prove a little dangerous, as its easy to start getting tempted towards exploring some of the more expensive options. although the book does cover a wide range of accomodation from casa rurals right through to converted monastries, it is certainly for the most part not for the budget traveller, although many of the places covered offer very good value for money, and the comprehensive details provided with each special place gives extensive details on what meals and so on are included, and occasionaly recomending specialities. Planning a trip to the north of Portugal with a copy of Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay offered an irresistible choice. The quality of the accommodation was everything the book led me to expect - and more. The only drawback is that with so much superb choice, I'll have to go back again and again to experience the places I couldn't fit in the first time around. It's a funny, friendly, full of great tips. It's almost as if you are being recommended little known places and interesting tit bits on the city by a trusted friend. My boyfriend and I stayed at one of the hotels, it was one of very cheap ones, but we didn't want to pay much because we were going to a very expensive concert. Anyway it was really good value, really central (Russell Sq) and had a very upbeat feel.
