.Like Men of War: Black Troops in the Civil War 1862-1865
City Travel Guides > Books > American Civil War
by: Noah Andre Trudeau

1999-01
"Like Men of War" is a good book that details the overlooked exploits the United States Colored Troops from the Civil War. The only faults in the book is its sometimes ponderous length, its discounting of massacres committed by the U.S.C.T. against Confederates, and its discounting of the contributions of blacks to the Southern cause.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Why the South Lost the Civil War
.Why the South Lost the Civil War

by: Richard E. Beringer, Herman Hattaway, Archer Jones, William N. Still

I'm afraid I couldn't disagree more with "A Customer". This is a useful and interesting book that debates the causes of the Confederacy's defeat, with far more than four historians contributing their theses to the intellectual melting pot. Having done this it produces a synthesis of the reasons provided. One can disagree, even dislike, what is said, but that does not mean that the book is poor. I use it as a book for secondary school students and hope that others will recognise its value for stretching the more able. If you want a straightforward, didactic piece that provides a set answer, this isn't for you. If you want a basis for debate (in my humble opinion, the point of historical study) this is a good addition to your library.

.Picket's Charge: A Microhistory of the Final Attack at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863

This book would be ideal for someone who knows a bit about the American Civil War (the main battles, generals, etc.) but maybe didn't know more about Gettysburg than you'd find on Wikipaedia. It is written mainly by going back to around 450 first-hand accounts and therefore tells the story mainly from the point-of-view of the men who were there. This produces a very readable account of the human experience of being there.

Who might be slightly less satisfied with the book? Maybe people who want to see the battle in some sort of strategic context, or those who want a discussion of the strategic options faced by the generals. A second type of reader who might only give the book 3 or 4 stars out of 5 are people who have read several ... Read More:

This book (and the other in the series in infantry) shows a large number of illustrations of the uniforms of the American Civil War. The illustrations tend to be the same view (face on) of a figure with, in turn, the different uniforms; though views of equipment and saddlery are also given.

The product is up to the high standard of all Histoire & Collections books. The aim of the books is not to portray the soldiery in the dramatic poses of Don Troiani but rather to act as a "pattern book" for the different styles.

The one weakness is that there is no text to accompany the illustrations, some of which are wonderfully odd. There is a basic text on the war and how it was fought.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : I Fought with Custer: The Story of Sergeant Windolph
.I Fought with Custer: The Story of Sergeant Windolph
City Travel Guides > Books > American Civil War
by: Charles Windolph

June 01, 1987
This book is compiled from the found writings of a sergeant of the Seventh Cavalry who survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The first hand accounts of men like Sergeant Windolph and Theodore Goldin are very valuable and interesting reading. They were not men defending their performance as were the officers like Benteen, Reno, and Godfrey. They had their biases but didn't have to grind axes. This account is worthwhile reading for students of the Seventh Cavalry and the Little Big Horn campaign.
