. Gettysburg, 1863: High Tide for the Confederacy (Osprey Military Campaign)
City Travel Guides > Books > American Civil War
by: Carl Smith
January 15, 1998
This book is a typical Osprey product. Is exhaustive in his data and very well documented. Of course, it is not a novel, so you are not going to find "The killer angels", but is well written and clear. All the major events, Bufford's retarding action, Little Round Top fight and, of course, Pickett's charge, are described in detail and whit its own maps. In addittion some other minor engagements are covered too, as the action at Culp's Hill in the second day and the cavalry battle in the third day. The plates from Adam Hook describing the events of the battle are very well detailed, although to my view, ... Read More:

. Gettysburg: A Testing of Courage
City Travel Guides > Books > American Civil War
by: Noah Andre Trudeau
2003-06
The Terrible Swift Sword” continues Bruce Catton’s journey through the Civil in this, the middle book in his trilogy. Covering the period from the summer of 1861 through the fall of 1862, Catton leads the reader through the military, political and social aspects of the war. Here we meet Charles Francis Adams, American Ambassador in London as he maneuvers to maintain British neutrality while British cloth industry manufacturers and laborers scream for Southern cotton. The story of the Eastern front in this book is essentially the story of the McClellan era. The close relationship between McClellan and the Army of the Potomac was a unique and mutual exchange of devotion and affection. In the Western ... Read More:

. Jim Bridger: Mountain Man
City Travel Guides > Books > American Civil War
by: Stanley Vestal
January 01, 2002
Although Vestal establishes his credibility as a researcher, it is not enough to research well; one must also be a writer, and Vestal's embarrassing attempts to mimic Bridger's speech is a travesty. From inane, trite cliches to ungrammatical and unmusical diction, it is clear that Vestal needed a much stronger editor. Recommended only for those who can ignore the non-standard grammar and abyssmal writing or who are interested only in the research.
