Just a warning that this is exactly the same book as the Pocket Oxford Latin Dictionary, but in hardcover. I didn't check the ISBNs before I bought both and was misled by the cover illustration that claimed 100,000 words phrases and translations as compared with the 46,000 claimed for the Pocket dictionary in its product description. On this basis it's exactly as good as the Pocket dictionary, which is why I gave it 4 stars - haven't actually had a chance to look at it yet. The hardcover is slightly bigger dimensions, but only just and the jacket cover is identical on both. Just depends if you prefer hardcover or soft I guess.

Having worked my way through almost all of the JACT course using the previous edition I decided to buy the new edition to use to complete the course and as a refresher to go back over past material. The new format is much improved in almost every respect. Perhaps the best new feature is the now combined text and vocab. in one book which prevents flipping back and forth between two books. Visually a great improvement as well, with the introduction of a second colour, new layout and better font. As a self-taught (not very proficient - yet) Greek student, the JACT course is still the best of the ones that I have used. I am a great fan of John Taylor's books, Greek to GCSE 1&2 are outstanding books and if, as an adult or younger student, you want to read the classics or the New Testament in the original, they are a great starting point.

Greek Beyond GCSE (2008), ISBN 978 1 85399 704 4, does indeed take you up to AS level classical Greek, but vocabulary tops out at only 830 words, so you will need to get something like Jerry Toner's 'Greek Key Words' (top 2000 most common words) to build vocab quickly, or if you are a New Testament reader, the old but good 'Pocket Lexicon of the Greek New Testament' by Souter. And a lexicon like the famed Liddell & Scott (abridged) - the old 1949 hardback impression is excellent quality print if you can get ... Read More:

Full marks to Nicholas Oulton. In my search for a good Latin course, I have constantly been reminded of the traumatic experience of studying chemistry in the 1950s. A very useful reference work which I bought because I needed to translate Latin from various sources like wills or birth, death and marriage records, or manorial rolls and court records. As you travel further back in time, Latin was the commonly used language and a lot of English words are descended from the original Latin or are still used eg ipso facto, ibid, NB etc. This book is aimed at the Local or Family Historian whether amateur or professional genealogist. It is proving a very useful resource book and comes highly recommended.
