this book is simply great! it tells you everything you need to know about training, breeding, caring and playing with the greates breed of dog around. it grabbed my attention right from the front cover with that adorable picture of that labrador retreiver. i have two labrador retreivers the are both black one is a bith one is a dog the dog is called mac and the bitch is called flo. i trained, cared and loved them all from instruction from this book and they are great dogs so the book must be teaching people right.

A must read for anyone interested in Operation "Market Garden" and the great battles of WW II in general. Superbly researched and well-written, it demolishes the myth of the allegedly German material "superiority" during that epic battle.

This is an outrageously poor book! I suppose whoever gave it 5 Stars must be a Labour Party supporter because I cannot find anything to justify giving this book anything more than a single star. It's not that there's anything wrong with the facts in this book, it's just that I found the way it was written so utterly boring. If you're interested in reading about stories of fantastic courage from WWII, then Forgotten Voices of the Secret War by Bailey is a much sharper and more genuine read, with plenty of history straight from the Imperial War Museum archives.

Bought this book when I was getting my first puppy, the book was packed full of information on how to successfully train and socialise your new pup, including useful info on how to keep your pup happy and healthy. Even has information on harmful things for dogs, like certain foods and plants, before i got this I had no idea that Onions and Grapes were poisonous to dogs.

The information is so relevant and useful that i even found myself using many of the techniques on my older dog, finding them all great with helping to train him again.

Fascinating read about the desperate position the French vineyard owners found themselves in during the Second World War. With Nazis determined to pillage the vineyards, the owners resorted to every trick possible to protect their assets. With experience of defeating phylloxera in the 19th century and the preceding world war, the vineyard owners had developed a knack of finding ways to survive. The book describes an eclectic collection of motives and actions that helped the wine industry survive occupation.

At the heading to one chapter an anonymous contributor states that a woman on seeing incendiaries falling over London, puts up her umbrella and goes out 'singing in the rain'. As 'singing in the rain' was made in 1952, it quite probably isn't true! I also don't believe the one about the RAF pilot being killed by farm workers who wouldn't accept he was British. he only had to tell them to where to go, so to speak.

Perhaps memories are becoming a little fuzzy with time.

Barbara Sykes' books are always worth reading, but this insight into the workings of the border collie mind is rivetting. After 25 years of life with these fabulous dogs, I thought I had them pretty well sorted out, but many times while reading I have been surprised that I hadn't understood some particular nuance of the border collie body language.
It seems that my dogs still have something to teach me.
A must read for anyone with an interest in border collies, this book should be issued to every new owner; it would save a lot of grief to both owners and dogs.

This is a small book covering a very big subject in a fair amount of detail. What it cuts out is the gentle learning curve and it gets straight down to business. That's great but makes the book initially quite intimidating, especially if you pick it up and start from the middle!
Don't let it put you off though, stick the book next to the loo and read a few paragraphs each day - even repeating the same ones - until it all sinks in and it will significantly enhance your understanding.

this book is great at skimming lots of subjects, but not in any depth. I'm doing a dog psychology course, and expected this book to have lots of indepth detail about dogs, behaviour,psychology, and physical information, but was solely dissapointed. If you want a book you can get your teeth into, don't buy this one there are many others that cover the same subjects with much more detail, in less technical language. But also there are books that cover the subjects in a much clearer technical way, this book is neither one or the other, which i found annoying. I'd rather a book be catered for the general dog owner, or the specialist, this tried to be all to everyone and failed miserably. I purchased the earlier (and larger) version of this book "Getting in Touch with Your Dog: An Easy, Gentle Way to Better Health and Behavior " hoping to help my 4 year old rescue Border Collie. Consequently it is my view that if you have a dog which is not at ease with human physical contact then this system is probably not the best starting point on your quest.
Due to his horrendous previous life, my dog was very intolerant of being touched or handled to the point that, no matter how softly and gently you approached him if he didn't instigate the contact he would simply bite out of fear. (Matters are improving but not from trying to press him into human contact)
