Alison Weir has yet again managed to put forth a well researched book about a person shrouded in a lot of legend and few facts. Some might complain that there is far too much written about the time period and not the woman, but I prefer a well researched book that is unafraid to state that some things simply cannot be known than a romanticized and meaty novel full of inaccuracies. She still manages to bring Eleanor to life with the resources she does have, and I found this book difficult to put down. Because of this book, Eleanor of Aqutaine has joined the ranks of my favorite historical figures.

I am really pleased with this book which seems to be up to date and accurate. I had lost faith in travel guides having bought one from a different publisher for Bulgaria last year.Some listed hotels had been closed for years and some built years ago were not even listed although the book was a new edition. I have never been to Dordogne before and need accuracy. All websites mentioned in the book seem to exist (at least the 20 which I have tried.) Details of bike and kayak hire are given and those I contacted responded. I feel that I know the Dordogne so well that I don't actually need to go there in person! My wife and I will make this the first item we place in our luggage for our visit.

It seems the Michelin Green Guide to Aquitaine is not (yet?) available in English. This version - "Le Guide Vert" - is in French.

I was expecting it to be in English. This is not too much of problem, but it does seem that no other Michelin Guide to the area has been published in English since the 2001 "Michelin Green Guide Atlantic Coast: Poitou, Aquitaine, the Basque Country" which is still selling for around £30.

Please correct me if what I've written is incorrect.

Being in need of an up-to-date giude of the region I chose this from Amazon who offered a good choice. The Guide proved very useful and was well laid out and easy to use. There were a few discrepancies in opening times and prices but this could be accounted for since the book was published over a year ago.

I've been a huge Penman fan since my teens and my first encounter with "The Sunne in Splendour" - this latest novel does not disappoint.

Penman brings the latter stages of the turbulent marriage of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine to life with vigour and sensitivity. Penman's characterisiation of Eleanor is fascinating. Eleanor is evoked as an imperious queen and duchess, a passionate wife and mother, and a complex woman. I'm intrigued to know what a real Medieval scholar would make of Penman's Eleanor but for me she stands out as the most interesting woman ever to be a Queen of England.

I've always enjoyed Penman's historical novels far more than the medieval mysteries. If you've ever lost quite a few hours of your life ... Read More:
