Time Out Tokyo provides good cultural information -- restaurants, musuems, stores, etc. Unfortunately, it does not contain even the basics in terms of maps. Many of the recommended sites are not on any map in the book, and there is no overall map.

The Lonely Planet Tokyo City Guide is far better in terms of maps and other logistical information, such as where trains run and when. On the other hand, Time Out is clearly better when it comes to what to see and do. So, take your pick, or take both!

I love these guides - they're the sort that I keep long after I have travelled to a place rather than discarding them as I do with many other brands (that seem to easily become dated and look dog-eared).

The Eyewitness guides are stunning books with plenty of beautiful photos and detailed writing about not just the areas but also the history and culture of places. Infact, I have bought some just because I am interested in looking at and learning about a place even if I haven't been there yet.

I am APPALLED by the fact that this book made it to the New York Times bestseller list and, apparently, will be made into a movie with....Julia Roberts (is this true?)

What does this tell us about American culture and values??? Why should such a shallow piece of work written by a self-absorbed narcissist receive such fame and accolades? I am truly mystified. This book was all about HERSELF. Poor little me who received an ENORMOUS advance to write this book before she even left the States. Who whinged and moaned and felt sorry for herself while in Italy, can you imagine??? To make a travelogue different from those that have gone before takes talent but to inject a sense of documentary evidence and current reportage takes great skill. Magic Bus by Rory Maclean gives us all of that by setting the Asia Overland phenomenon in context - with musical reference points from the 60's like Grateful Dead, Beatles and Pink Floyd sprinkled liberally through his work; great writers who encapsulated the moment like Siddharta, Richard Brautigan and Ginsberg but also by showing us the effects of conflict on those he meets.

Very disappointed with this supposedly updated edition. Hotel reviews were woefully inaccurate and have obviously been done without being visited - on my trip I came across the previous edition which described one hotel as being rundown - the same hotel was described as the best hotel in town in the new edition and it was obvious it hadn't been done up in the intervening period! Restaurant recommendations rarely describe the food on offer and, when they do, seem to focus on pizza or burgers. And I would truly love to know what is meant by a 'cookie cutter' hotel which is how one place is described. Easily the worst LP guidebook I've ever come across - and unsurprisingly a view shared by several other travellers I met. My top tip? Never stay at the first ... Read More:

I won't go into much detail of how this book is written neither give this book moral evaluation like some people here do in their reviews. Especially the guy who gave it 1 star accusing Ms Jolie of doing little. Disgusted as that man probably wrote his wrote whilst seated at a comfy desk himself. Anyway, I personally enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to my friends. Below is a brief list of pos/neg sides of it.

- it gives you insight into the places most media have lost interest in, draws a vivid picture of places she visits in your own mind;

Well, I have to disagree about this book.I was given it as a Christmas present by my son before a diving trip to Curacao...Footprint books are normally so thorough. Well, here the pictures are great but it is not "light" on the Caribbean so much as totally non-existant!So give it the title 'Long Haul Diving Destinations' and see if that gets more stars...
For Africa the Tierneys recommend Kenya but diving professionals I know recommend Mozambique,the Quirimbas;Medjumbe and Matemo.

The best way to judge a book like this is to look at areas you do know.

The three reviews below refer to the old edition of this book. The new version has been entirely rewritten and re-researched. As part of the team who helped write it I should leave the reviews to other people, but I think the criticism of not including Ukraine is quite unfair given that the book never claims to do so!
