Rob Gifford, journalist, long term resident in China and fluent Mandarin speaker, takes one last journey along the old Silk Road (modern day route 312) before leaving China for a posting in London. Travelling the route using a combination of hitching, public transport and taxis, he contemplates and talks to the people he meets about the state of China, how it got there, and where it might be going.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. We walked part of this this summer but found that the section that we walked was very poorly described by the book and resulted in long delays due to poor directions. Kabak to Alunca optional waymarked route was particularly bad. All in all it was an amazing place but we found the book dissapointing.

I am a professional teacher and a native Russian speaker and I am trying to teach my fiancée Russian, and he is not a very hard-working student and definitely not a language person. I must admit this book is great - the most successful so far.
It is an easy to follow book. It consists of units short enough to cover during 1.5-2 hours class each. Each Unit introduces new words, gives a couple of dialogues to read and understand, explain the basic Grammar used in the dialogues and drill the new material with a few exercises. It is accompanied by 2 cd-s, which should be bought separately. The CDs are a must if you want to use this book: you won't be able to check yourself or listen to dialogues without them.

This is another brilliant account of a Palin journey. It has the usual beautifully reproduced photography and is written with Palin's wonderful sense of description and humour. I especially like the history and culture of the region he travelled in and so found this book very interesting and enjoyable. There are so many varied places and cultures in one small area of the world, and on this trip, that there is something for everyone in this book. Another great piece of travel literature.

Travel books should be up to date (or as much as publishing and printing time allows) and this was published in August 2000 and is probably the latest book on Moscow. But it's also full of what you need to know for a visit to Moscow, with a wide range of topics covered. It also covers both the cheap and the expensive ends of the hotel and restaurant markets. One criticism: the maps are not very clear; the type is too small. All in all, a good book to plan your trip and take with you.

I went to Japan for the first time in 2007, on a business trip. I read this book after I'd visited. I wish I'd read it before! It's not a practical guide or anything like that but it does get beneath the surface and help to explain the culture. I found it helped to develop my "feel" for the place. Very thoughtful treatment.

this book is very informative and easy to follow. I would have liked to see more colour pictures in it though - that was the only disappointment for me.
