What on earth drives Colin Thubron? Why, traversing a subcontinent whose name has become synonymous with suffering, would he face tedium, banality and appalling weather to seek out agonizing communities, explore Artic death camps, plumb the worldview of demoralized individuals and contemplate remote sites where dramatic events unfolded years, if not millennia, ago? Certainly there is an unrelenting fascination with the mysterious heart of Eurasia, crisscrossed at least three times by the Russian and Chinese-speaking author, but there seems to be more. Time Out Tokyo provides good cultural information -- restaurants, musuems, stores, etc. Unfortunately, it does not contain even the basics in terms of maps. Many of the recommended sites are not on any map in the book, and there is no overall map.

The Lonely Planet Tokyo City Guide is far better in terms of maps and other logistical information, such as where trains run and when. On the other hand, Time Out is clearly better when it comes to what to see and do. So, take your pick, or take both!

In one sense, it is very easy to get around Tokyo. The subways and trains go just about everywhere. On the other hand, finding a particular shop or restaurant can be very difficult (for Westerners) because of the tangle of streets and the lack of signs, but even more importantly the different method of identifying addresses. The maps in your guide book -- even the Lonely Planet books -- are not sufficient if you want to be able to find that restaurant your friend recommended.

This easy-to-use map makes a world of difference. With it, you can find just about anything, even if you do not speak a word of Japanese and you have never been to Tokyo.

I bought this book in Tokyo before travelling to Vladivostok - not because it was my preferred choice, but because it was the only one I could find.

Whilst I agree with what the other reviewers have said, I couldn't have completed my Trans-Siberian trip without this book. I'd never have found the cheaper hotels along the route, nor had a clue what to see or how to get there. Unlike most destinations these days, a guide book is absolutely essential for independent Trans-Sib travellers and this one is not the best, but is better than none at all.

I am a professional teacher and a native Russian speaker and I am trying to teach my fiancée Russian, and he is not a very hard-working student and definitely not a language person. I must admit this book is great - the most successful so far.
It is an easy to follow book. It consists of units short enough to cover during 1.5-2 hours class each. Each Unit introduces new words, gives a couple of dialogues to read and understand, explain the basic Grammar used in the dialogues and drill the new material with a few exercises. It is accompanied by 2 cd-s, which should be bought separately. The CDs are a must if you want to use this book: you won't be able to check yourself or listen to dialogues without them.

I would absolutely recommend this startling book to ANYBODY for at least two reasons:

First, Hartley's account of Africa-its beauties and its horrors-is the most candid, fair and honest I've ever read. As one who reads a lot on Africa and has traveled there many times, I am often sickened by the spin and slant that many authors give their books. They are anti-colonial, anti-American, anti-globalization or anti-something else. They use Africa as a medium to push thier own agendas. But Hartley's account displays neither the pride nor the prejudice of his peers. He is frank, even blunt-both about what he sees and his own response to it. He puts his story out there, for better or worse, willing to accept any verdict.

I went to Japan for the first time in 2007, on a business trip. I read this book after I'd visited. I wish I'd read it before! It's not a practical guide or anything like that but it does get beneath the surface and help to explain the culture. I found it helped to develop my "feel" for the place. Very thoughtful treatment.
