. Cambodia (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

The guide book is useful, interesting and really helps you make the most of your time in Cambodia. I wouldn't have seen half of the amazing places if I hadn't taken it with me. The information in it is accurate despite what the local taxi drivers may say!! Stand your ground!! There is no need to buy any extra guide books when you're there either - all of their information is included in this one. The only thing the book doesn't prepare you for is the random overpricing that has occurred, the variation from shop to shop is immense. Shop where the locals shop and you'll save a fortune.

. Hong Kong and Macau (Lonely Planet City Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia

I bought this book for my 1st trip to HK (about 2 weeks ago). I found it great at 1st that it comes with a pull-out map but realise after; everywhere I go there were maps provided for including the hotel+tubes! The eating places suggested were over-rated and some of the local eats like the famous local HK pastry "wife biscuit" or "wanton noodles" were never mentioned which seems rather tragic.
Also, the nightlife suggested by the book was also so-so........ Instead i got to know about the hottest club (Club Beijing) from a local hairdresser doing my hair. The book also failed to mention that there was a hot bar right above Hotel LKF with fantastic view + the people tend to be dressier on Saturday than Friday!
Overall, i felt the ... Read More:

. Turkey (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

I have visited Istanbul around nine times and Izmir about seven. This guide will really take you to the wrong hotels and restaurants. The cultural guide is ok despite a rather boring layout, esp. maps. But the restaurant suggestions are disasterous: where do you find Istanbul's best gourmet, Corne d'Or, or the intellectual bastion Yakup 2, or the best chicken and mezes in Istanbul (Hanedan), or the nostalgic charm of Istanbul's 1930's belle epoque (Rejans)? Instead mediocre places are recommended which will give the dogmatic reader a mediocre holiday. Also, Lonely Planet does not mention the new hotel in Izmir (Crowne Plaza Izmir) which receives raving critics. Does it not know of it yet? And no mention of restaurants like Bonjour, British Grill & Pub, ... Read More:

. A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush (Picador Books)
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia
by: Eric Newby
December 04, 1981
From the pathetically inadequate preparations to the cooking of Eric Newby`s watch to the meeting with Thesiger...One absurd incident follows another as the two brave and foolish climbers fail to achieve their declared aim. It is such a funny book, every page is a joy. It is the kind of book you hope will never end. Sadly it does. Nothing to do but read it again...but, alas, I lent my copy to someone, and then it went out of print.
Luckily I managed to find a replacement in a second hand book shop.
So glad its in print again, now I can lend my copy without risk of being unable to replace it if it strays..

. Indian Takeaway: One Man's Attempt to Cook His Way Home
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia
by: Hardeep Singh Kohli
September 04, 2008
I really like Hardeep Singh Kohli and I love food; so this book should have been right up my alley. Having asked himself the question, `Why did I feel the need to apologise for being British in India and apologise for being Indian when in Britain?', Hardeep plans a journey to India in order to `find himself'. The blurb would have you believe that he does this by cooking typically English foods such as Yorkshire Pudding and fry ups, and using them as a means to connect with Indian people and as a result to learn more about himself and his feelings about having a dual nationality.
Unfortunately, the blurb is a bit misleading. Just to give you an idea of what I mean, I quote from page 208 (more than two-thirds of the way through the book) `I have been rather ... Read More:

. Iran (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia
by: Andrew Burke, et al
July 01, 2008
Having recently visited iran in August 2008 I found the Lonely Planet guide to be the most accurate, although my version was 2004 therefore not quite up to date eg the new airport has now opened. It provides information on just about everything you can expect to encounter on your travels through this country. The biggest truth being the Tehran traffic! This being the only issue regarding safety I had throughout my 3 week travels. The pollution makes your eyes water, and the smog hanging over the city cuts out the view of the mountains beyond. Crossing the road made a farce of the green cross code! Yes, you really do wait for others to cross and go with them!
Fashions for women are variable. Many do still wear chador, and all without exception hijab. However, colour ... Read More:
