This is not a self sufficient guide, but if you combine it with the Nepal Lonely Planet and some good maps it is really helpful. Why go through all this trouble, you might ask, and not get something more comprehensive. First because most travellers (I make a bold assumption) are used to the Lonely Planet style and second because being of a smallish size it is the perfect guide to keep in your pocket while you walk and check as you go along what you covered against the trek dexcription found inside.

My connection with this book is a long one as I first read it in the 1960's and I was pleased to see it back in print. One of the sponsors the trip was Brooke Bond and my late father-in-law was the Indian based representive of the company and looked after the group when they were in Delhi - their exploits are recorded in the book which includes an hilarious TV performance on Indian TV.
In 1994 I brought the whole group together at Magdelene College Cambridge for a celebratory dinner at which it was intended for my father-in-law to meet up with them after 40 years but sadly he died just before the dinner took place. To make a travelogue different from those that have gone before takes talent but to inject a sense of documentary evidence and current reportage takes great skill. Magic Bus by Rory Maclean gives us all of that by setting the Asia Overland phenomenon in context - with musical reference points from the 60's like Grateful Dead, Beatles and Pink Floyd sprinkled liberally through his work; great writers who encapsulated the moment like Siddharta, Richard Brautigan and Ginsberg but also by showing us the effects of conflict on those he meets.

Indeed it is a walk through a museum collection of that time - flip flops; beards, religious enlightenment, reverence for all things alternative and the desire to experience life through world travel.

Very disappointed with this supposedly updated edition. Hotel reviews were woefully inaccurate and have obviously been done without being visited - on my trip I came across the previous edition which described one hotel as being rundown - the same hotel was described as the best hotel in town in the new edition and it was obvious it hadn't been done up in the intervening period! Restaurant recommendations rarely describe the food on offer and, when they do, seem to focus on pizza or burgers. And I would truly love to know what is meant by a 'cookie cutter' hotel which is how one place is described. Easily the worst LP guidebook I've ever come across - and unsurprisingly a view shared by several other travellers I met. My top tip? Never stay at the first hotel ... Read More:
