After a trip to NZ last month I purchased this book and another of a same title (ISBN: 1901130762) as I have the serious intention of emigrating.

I was very disappointed with this book for two reasons.

1. The book is full of copies of immigration/work permit, etc. forms. Also there are number of illustrations of newspaper ads e.g. 'here is what a jod ad looks like in NZ'. These illustrations seemed to be there to add thickness to the book.

2. My major disappointment was that a lot of the information was years out of date. Although the book says that this was revised for 2004 a lot of the detail in the book was out of date based on my trip, some I belive has not been updated since its first publication in 1994. ... Read More:

I bought this book to use for a trip to New Zealand, and took it along with a Lonely Planet Guide, so that I would be able to use the best of both books. Comparing like-for-like, I much preferred the Lonely Planet Guide as despite seeming to contain less information it actually contained much more relevant information about places to see, and what to do.

However, the level of detail contained within this book re history is second-to-none, containing history of the country as a whole, as well as history of each region. The maps are quite basic but very clear, certainly ideal for wandering about cities and woodlands. I used the Rough Guide in 2004 in Sydney and I was not very impressed. The maps were dreadful and a lot of the information was out of date. I actually found that the free Sydney guide that you pick up at Kingston Airport far more useful. For other parts of the trip I used Lonely Planet Gudies which have a much better layout and cover to cover their subjet areas a lot better.

on buying this book i expected to hear more about the history and people on pitcairn....well as for the people, according to dea she had not got one good word for any of them !!! and her double standards took my breath away, she complaines her friend sent her meat paste knowing it was banned to eat pork, yet she drank and had sex with a married man, also taboo on this small island and when ron questioned her after irma wrote to him, good old dea made out irma was a liar !! now not only did she have sex with this man , she also went back to his home looking for more...."is this the end" she simmpered to him, "the end of what??" he replied looking puzzled....now she did this knowing full well that all the islanders knew what she had done, in fact ... . . . and make it riveting reading at the same time. I imagine that most of us in the UK give little thought to Tasmania - that will almost certainly change for readers of this book. Mr Shakespeare weaves the early history of the country round that of his ancestors in a most entertaining fashion. At the same time he does not neglect the present. There were some awful rogues and vagabonds who seem to congregate here and once again poor Captain Bligh came unstuck at the hands of some of them! The claim that the Aborigines were/are not extinct is a little specious and depends very much on your definitions of "extinct" and "Aborigine" and what seems a current fashion among Tasmanians.
