I bought this book to use for a trip to New Zealand, and took it along with a Lonely Planet Guide, so that I would be able to use the best of both books. Comparing like-for-like, I much preferred the Lonely Planet Guide as despite seeming to contain less information it actually contained much more relevant information about places to see, and what to do.

However, the level of detail contained within this book re history is second-to-none, containing history of the country as a whole, as well as history of each region. The maps are quite basic but very clear, certainly ideal for wandering about cities and woodlands. Alex Stewart provides every useful piece of information about the nine Great Walks, in a layout that is easy to follow and easy to find what you need. I had never tramped before and this book taught me everything I needed to know - from advice on walking boots to weather, to protecting the natural environment (and months spent in New Zealand wilderness has made me passionate about protecting it).

Let me start by saying that this is a great book. The narrative is very readable and enjoyable. The author is likable and her descriptions help put you right in the moment with her.

At times the narrative moves a bit quickly and you feel like she has only brushed the surface of her moments in nature, but the overall journey for the reader is a pleasant one.

On a different note, I find her militant opinions on hikers who collect abandoned snail shells as souvenirs, and her laughable worries on relieving oneself in the woods, a bit ludicrous for a woman who gleefully joins ruffian goat hunters in the scene of their graphic jet-boat hunting party.
