My wife and I went to New Zealand in 2006 and used this book above all others as our major reference guide when we toured the whole of the south Island. Unlike a lot of other map/guide books this has stunning illustrations on every page and presents dozens of individual rad trips you can take around New Zealand, both north and south islands.

In short, this book is so good it had native New Zealanders singing its praises when we passed it round and shared discussions of our travels when we finally met up with friends and relatives in Wellington. If you're going on a road trip to New Zealand for the first time I'd recommend this book as it reveals quite a few routes you may not otherwise pay attention to. Good value.

I was really pleased with this book. For each stunning photograph, a small paragraph is there to explain it. Also it has a couple pages telling you about each island. It is very easy to read and understand.

I was really pleased with this book. For each stunning photograph, a small paragraph is there to explain it. Also it has a couple pages telling you about each island. It is very easy to read and understand.

This guide covers the wildlife found South of The Antarctic Convergence (the area where the warm currents coming south meet the cold currents going north). Whilst this is logical in geographical and natural history terms, it may be a disappointment to those whose holiday includes the Falkland Islands that although South Georgia is covered the Falklands are not. I do not know how much of a problem this will turn out to be in practice.

The book concentrates mainly on birds and marine mammals, although there are two or three pages on each of terrestrial plants and insects, marine invertebrates and fish. Dafila Scott's illustrations are a delight, being works of art in their own right as well as showing the identifying features clearly. ... Read More:

This excellent and indispensable guide is thoroughly researched, richly illustrated with photographs, and well written. But while it is an essential book for anyone planning a visit to Middle Earth, it is handicapped by one glaring omission: though several maps are provided, none adequately indicate the locations of Middle Earth's features. This is frustrating for anyone who wishes to use the book as a travel guide (though it is always possible to sort out locations by using the text and the limited maps provided) and a serious drawback for the armchair traveler who just wants to get a sense of how Middle Earth maps onto New Zealand.

Be sure to get the "Revised Edition".

An astonishing study of a slice of Australian history that every Aussie knows of, but not usually much about. Murgatroyd's writing is clear, exciting, and knowledgable - and her study of this man Burke, and his party's slow spiral to ruin, is a must-read for anyone, especially if they have a love for Australia.

I'm planning a trip to both Australia and New Zealnd, and this was the only book I could find that had them both in the same book - saves all that extra weight in the luggage. It's a good, comprehensive guide listing most of the popular travel destinations as well as some off the beaten track. There are plenty of maps - especially of the major cities, with close up maps of key areas within the cities.

The book has guides for each place: eating, drinking, sleeping, sightseeing,how to get there, how to get around etc. It's got a lot of web addresses so you can do further research if you need to.

The book is aimed at people travelling on the cheap so is full of useful advice and tips. I thought this guide was an excellent buy.
