Everybody knows the bare essentials of Australian wildlife- the kangaroo, koala, cockatoo and so on. But far more interesting is the tale of the Thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger, the last known specimen of which died in a zoo seventy years ago. This book is the story of three Americans who went to Tasmania to try to track down the Thylacine and its devotees. Part travelogue, part natural history, it's also a tribute to the people of Tasmania, who generally come out as far more wily and well-adjusted than the Manhattanite authors. The previous editions (see other reviews) may have been great, but the new Sept 2006 version is a real disappointment. Just used it for 3 weeks in NZ. For years I have used Lonely Planets. They give you information. Something has gone wrong with this NZ one. Far too much is the worst sort of travel writers' gush. Far too little is the sort of info LP are otherwise justly famous for. A real shame - lets hope LP are going to quickly revise and re-write it. Meanwhile, I'd suggest checking out the alternatives.

on buying this book i expected to hear more about the history and people on pitcairn....well as for the people, according to dea she had not got one good word for any of them !!! and her double standards took my breath away, she complaines her friend sent her meat paste knowing it was banned to eat pork, yet she drank and had sex with a married man, also taboo on this small island and when ron questioned her after irma wrote to him, good old dea made out irma was a liar !! now not only did she have sex with this man , she also went back to his home looking for more...."is this the end" she simmpered to him, "the end of what??" he replied looking puzzled....now she did this knowing full well that all the islanders knew what she had done, in fact ... In order to gain a critial understanding of this book it is important to understand the genre of writing it typifies. Succinctly put, true to its journalistic origins, it is close to the thick description of an ethnographer, but lacking any of the associated methods or comparative data which would have helped to contextualise the claims. Along with other contemporary practitioners of this dubious art, such as Bill Bryson for example, once having read Pilger, one is simply left wondering about the clear (over) reliance on anecdotal evidence. How representative are the claims? Is Pilger any more insightful, or rather less glib and superficial, than the object of his critique i.e. those who have a vested interest in preserving/marketing the officially sanctioned ...
