We own about 15 of the DK Eyewitness Travel guides, and have dogeared the pages over several trips. They are amazingly useful.

But this one is not their best effort. Hawaii is a very diverse place, and to try and "hit the highlights" in a travel guide is a mistake. This book is right at 200 pages, but almost 80 are about Honolulu, Wakiki and Oahu, leaving only 120 pages for all of the other islands. Even the pieces about Oahu (with little info about the west coast/Makaha and just a mattering on the North Shore) and Honolulu (with a few measly paragraphs on Pearl Harbor) is scant.

Bought this book expecting a normal sized paperback, but then.......a ginormous package arrived! My boyfriend eagerly tore it open (it was his birthday present) and inside found a hardback book of about 40cm x 30cm! Im goung to take great pleasure watching him trying to hold that above his head while reading at night! It's a great book, but I think it's more of a hommage to Ralph Steadmans art than Thompsons writing. Still, it's a great buy!

We bought this book as we wanted an insight as to what its really like to emergrate. Although the book did provide this, i would avoid reading this book if you are looking to be inspired. We found the narrative of the book to be fairly negative, which i suppose is understandable due to the problems the Goddards experienced. I think this book is most useful for learning from the Goddards' mistakes which to me, with the benefit of hindsight, seem glaring obvious.

By all means this book is worthy of a read, but is not suitable as a 'how to' guide on how to emmigrate to new zealand. For me, all this book did was leave me feeling that I am in need of some different points of view and some accounts of people who took a different tact to emmigrating ... Read More:

Having now gone through the process of moving to New Zealand and read all the books, I can say that this is the best to read. The book is well set out with good sections on things like pensions, health, telephones and work. I think that it describes the areas of New Zealand well The description on New Zealand television is true - it really is very bad! The book only skips over the immigration process and that is a good thing. The rules change every year so it is better to go to the New Zealand Immigration Service website for up to date information. My advice to anyone is read this book but if you want to live here for goodness sake come on a holiday first. You need to experience it and I can honestly say it has many benefits but it sure isn't paradise!

A small and pocket sized guide. Excellent value for money. I found the map to be great when visiting Sydney on my own. Information in the guide is very concise. It probably isn't the best guide if you want very detailed reviews and photographs. I would recommend a guide to take out and about when exploring the city.
