The best guide to punctuation available. I'd read a number of guides to this subject and I still wasn't completely clear on some points until I came across this excellent book. It's crystal clear and very easy to read and use. I wish this had been the first punctuation guide I'd read: I would have saved myself both time and money. The book covers a number of areas that I didn't expect but found very useful, such as referencing and how to lay out reports.

I've since read a number of R.L. Trask's books and they're all outstanding. 'Language: The Basics' is brilliant. He's a truly talented writer and communicator. I wish more academics could write and explain ideas like Mr Trask.

I'll start by saying I think I expected a bit too much of this product. I attempted to use it in France after using the Michel Thomas Foundation Course: French (Michel Thomas Series) (which incidentally is very good). But I found that because I knew a little French already, everything I needed to know was too advanced for this book. The dictionary was a lot more use.

On the other hand, if you don't speak even a word of French this might be useful to you. it has phonetic pronunciations of all the words and useful sections which might get you out of a scrape. But if you can afford it... forget this and go for the French course instead!

This is a little book of 25 Spanish crossword puzzles. Maybe puzzle isn't quite the right word here as each puzzle only consists of around six words! Still, it's only easy if you know all the words. You're likely to pick up some useful vocabulary even if you are an intermediate student as I could only manage to finish two puzzles unaided out of the 25. There's a list of the 150 Spanish words used at the back of the book and the solutions. I used to do a puzzle each day and found it sort of amusing. If you get bored with the puzzles, then you can always colour in the pictorial clues. Plus it's dirt cheap. Recommended.

This is the course book that was used in a four week intensive Italian evening class that I attended, and I don't have any complaints about it. All the usual things in a modern language coursebook are here, but in this case, the text is aesthetically presented and is more or less faultless in the ratio of exercises of different types and of grammar and glossaries. I still enjoy to work through this textbook again at high speed just for the fun of it, despite having moved on from the level of most of the material therein.

As a writer and teacher of creative writing I find this a gold mine for starter activities and longer writing exercises. It lets you try out approaches and techniques rather than being a how to guide to creative writing- and most importantly shares with you the results of other writers (both famous and unknown) who have done the exercises.
