. Easy Learning Polish (Collins Easy Learning Audio Course)

All quite good fun, and non-patronising, it has the poor plinky-plonky music you would expect and the odd slightly cringey librarian's joke "so you want to say good day - dzin dobre - pretend you want to start your day with a gin - not a good idea" etc. But it's friendly and accessible, and doubtless very useful as a phrase book, though I haven't found a Pole to try out my new-found skills.
The only issue is the lack of written confirmation of your pronunciation, so, taking a simple word like 'sir' - I couldn't tell from the female narrator whether it was pronounced paNi or paNGi. For my level of language I suspect it won't much matter; and it's good fun driving along learning Polish with your toddler in any case.

. Mandarin Phrasebook (Lonely Planet Phrasebook)
City Travel Guides > Books > Aviation
by: Anthony Garnaut

On a trip to China I ordered this phrasebook as I have absolutely no knowledge of Mandarin and was told China was quite difficult to get around in due to the low level of English spoken over there.
In truth, at places like airports staff there will speak English and signs will be written in English. In Beijing airport I was even able to ask a janitor a question in English and he understood me. In more rural China (specifically I went to Fujian province) it's very unlikely that you'll come across someone that can speak English, but places still have some signs in English.
Following on from my previous point, the writing system will pose a problem and is one this book cannot solve, not that it aims to. Rather you will just have ... Read More:

. Brazilian Portuguese (Lonely Planet Phrasebook)
City Travel Guides > Books > Aviation
by: Marcia Monje de Castro
January 01, 2008
At first sight, a useful book despite a dictionary at the back that contains some glaring omissions of basic words such as 'from' and 'please', as well as other useful words such as 'sting'. Its culinary reader is threadbare too, with plenty of omissions - annoying when tried to decipher a menu.
But the real flaw is in the phonetic spellings of the Portuguese words. The author uses 'ng' to indicate the nasal vowels that characterise Brazilian Portuguese, but this only works about half the time. The rest of the time you're just mispronouncing the word.
The biggest omission of all, though, is as follows. In Brazilian Portuguese, when a 't' is followed by an 'e' or an 'i', this means the 't' is pronounced like the 'j' in jam or 'ch' in church. ... Read More:

. The Chambers Dictionary Thumb Index, 11th edition
City Travel Guides > Books > Aviation
by: Chambers
August 22, 2008
This is a little book of 25 Spanish crossword puzzles. Maybe puzzle isn't quite the right word here as each puzzle only consists of around six words! Still, it's only easy if you know all the words. You're likely to pick up some useful vocabulary even if you are an intermediate student as I could only manage to finish two puzzles unaided out of the 25. There's a list of the 150 Spanish words used at the back of the book and the solutions. I used to do a puzzle each day and found it sort of amusing. If you get bored with the puzzles, then you can always colour in the pictorial clues. Plus it's dirt cheap. Recommended.
