I bought this book whilst living in a French speaking country and working at a European Union institution, for both of which knowledge of French was essential. I was instantly impressed with its quality, and its no nonsense approach to French. Far from more "all round" courses which aim to make learning pleasant, this book presupposes a level of interest and commitment that means there are no pictures or cultural notes. Just the language itself.

The book has a common format. A brief and direct introduction to the verb tense being explored, followed by LOTS of example exercises, where our knowledge of the verb tense just taught is tested to destruction point. This is, undoubtedly, -the- grammar reference for those learning Spanish. It has a high level of detail that will appeal to those with a working knowledge of the language, but may be intimidating to someone new to Spanish.

The text is liberally interspersed with examples, and is very clear - particularly with the glossary at the back, which contains explanations of various grammatical terms that are used.

I would consider this book to be a 'must-have' for anyone wanting to get a firmer grasp of Spanish grammar.

This is a fabulous dictionary and thesaurus. The explanations are concise and easy to understand and the synonyms are clearly laid out and embedded within the dictionary. Highly recommended.

This book, first published in 1999, is now in its second edition, and forms part of OUP's "Handbooks for Language Teachers" series. The target audience is teachers, especially (but not only)trainees, and the aim is to help teachers judge the merits of different textbooks and methodologies in the field of EFL/ESL.
While the book assumes some knowledge of teaching and of basic linguistics, it does not assume a lot of specialized knowledge in either linguistics or SLA research; a technical glossary is provided. OK, so learning French grammar isn't fun! This book however was ideal for me, because along with the grammar itself there are a lot of workbook exercises, which is the only way to really lean - by practicing. Would receommend for those who already have a little understanding of french grammar but want to refresh and practice.

I thought this book would solve all of my grammatical questions and queries in a simple, straightforward manner. NO! The book is too brief. It just does not provide the level of detail I was after to give complete memorable understanding and allow full confidence in writing.

As a result, I needed resources to help make my French much cleaner and natural. I found it was a major part of my French improving, to the point where within 6-8 months, I could read EU Commission documents in French with 90%+ understanding. Strongly recommended, although you will need other types of book to augment your French. This book was a vital tool.

I was torn between buying this, and the extremely friendly looking "555" verbs by another publisher. My advice is do not believe that because this title only has 501 verbs, it is inferior. This book is superior to other titles for one ... Read More:

The recordings are made with English in one channel (right) and Spanish in the other (left). Every English word or phrase is then repeated in Spanish from the other speaker (twice, with a pause between each for you to repeat it). So either the reviewer had their balance knob turned just to the one channel, or they had a dodgy cassette machine. My CD version works fine and it seems a very effective way of learning. I would still suggest listening the first few times with the booklet in front of you (not in your car!) so that you can visualise the spelling of the words you are trying to say, but thereafter you can make valuable use of that lost time sitting in traffic jams by practicing your Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation.
