City Travel Guides > Books > Aviation
by: Raymond Williams
February 25, 1988
This is one of the few textbooks from my university degree course that I recommend to general readers. It might have its roots in academia but this book is vital reading for anybody even remotely interested in literature, sociology, psychology, epistemology or history (or, of course, etymology, which is the foundation it's built upon).
Put simply, Williams takes common words and critically evaluates their origins. Words such as 'art' or 'culture'... Where do they come from? What is the significance of their original meanings and what can it tell us about the modern usage? How does the meaning of words change, and what causes them to change? The book doesn't necessarily answer these questions but rather suggests, by example, what ... Read More:

. Wort für Wort: New Advanced German Vocabulary
City Travel Guides > Books > Aviation
by: Paul Stocker
May 26, 2006
"Wort für Wort" (4th edition) is a rather useless catch-all mess. Each chapter is divided in shorter bilingual sections which include a mishmash of arbitrarily selected words and phrases or even complete sentences (as if language was about parroting).
A number of those words and expressions could actually stand in several sections. Why put "terrorist attacks have an appreciable influence" in the section on "Tourism" rather than in the chapter on politics or economy, for instance? Why list "virus" and "influenza " in the "physical illnesses" section but not "microbe", "measles" or "cancer" for instance? ("Cancer" is in the section entitled "dying", together with... "pneumonia" and "high blood pressure"! ). The section on physical ... Read More:

. Style Guide (Economist (Hardcover))
City Travel Guides > Books > Aviation
from: Profile Books Ltd
September 08, 2005
The title I have used is the third of George Orwell's "six elementary rules" to writing good English. These six rules still have a prominent place in this book's introduction, although there are now many more, gleaned from and generally attributed to other writers. This, to come to the point immediately, is my only criticism of The Economist's Style Guide. In its ninth edition, it must be more than twice the length of the one I bought in the early 90s (and now lost - probably lent to someone). The extra length detracts, I think, from the clarity of the stylistic advice, confusing it with detail, e.g. distinguishing flaunt from flount, numerous entries on currencies and the writing of nationalities. Much of the detail is relevant only to those ... Read More:

. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (Teach Yourself Series)
City Travel Guides > Books > Aviation
by: David Riddell
March 28, 2003
For anyone new to teaching, this book offers a solid grounding in general teaching practise, but generally a little less than one might wish on TEFL. However there are nuggets of useful information, and the book is far more reasonably priced than other guides - as such, it is very good value for money.
I would strongly recommend this for anyone new to teaching, or returning to teaching after a break/moving to teaching adults from teaching children. The book is divided into logical and helpful sections, beginning with generic teaching skills and moving through subject specific areas such as teaching grammar, pronunciation, speaking and listening and writing.
The book is highly prescriptive and makes no apologies for being so,setting ... Read More:

. French Verb Drills (Language Verb Drills)
City Travel Guides > Books > Aviation
by: R. de Roussy de Sales
January 01, 2004
I bought this book whilst living in a French speaking country and working at a European Union institution, for both of which knowledge of French was essential. I was instantly impressed with its quality, and its no nonsense approach to French. Far from more "all round" courses which aim to make learning pleasant, this book presupposes a level of interest and commitment that means there are no pictures or cultural notes. Just the language itself.
The book has a common format. A brief and direct introduction to the verb tense being explored, followed by LOTS of example exercises, where our knowledge of the verb tense just taught is tested to destruction point. All of the major tenses are covered, including rarer tenses that only tend to crop up in historical ... Read More:
