This book was published pre-war and at least one of the authors was a long-time advocate of lifting sanctions and ally of John Pilger. It's terrible on the Kurdish regions.

More up-to-date is Gilles Munier 'Iraq: an Illustrated History and Guide', although it lacks the details re hotels etc.

Either might be of use - and or interest - to someone visiting. But surely no-one would be mad enough to rely on either for decisions about where to travel and where to stay: for either you MUST have up-to-date information from people on the ground whom you trust.

We have just returned from a week's holiday in the Kornati archipelago in the Croatian Adriatic, taking this book with us. We found it an excellent companion, helpful and illuminating on everything from Croatia's history to the abrasiveness of the limestone rock which makes up the islands. The maps are excellent and very clear. Above all the author's affection for the country shines through and is very infectious.

I ordered this book after using the smaller Bradt Guide to Lille on a recent trip to France. I understand the comment from the reader who complained that this is not a regular guide book with all the restaurants in the whole city kept in one chapter and all the hotels in another chapter. I reckon that for a daytripper or someone just passing through in a hurry this could be inconvenient. But I don't think that this book is for those people. It takes the city and turns it into a group of different neighbourhoods. Each district becomes a village destination in its own right, so it explores the sights and restaurants on your hotel's doorstep. I will test it out on my next trip. The Bradt Guide to Bulgaria, written by Dr Annie Kay, is the most comprehensive guide yet to this beautiful, rapidly changing, country in the far South East corner of Europe. Annie is a historian, a tour guide, an ornithologist, a nature lover and now a part-time resident in Bulgaria. "This book is sheer enchantment to read. Even if you never have the opportunity to visit the city, you will feel you know it intimately after reading this delightful little guide. The two authors write with a loving and intimate knowledge of the city. While never compromising on detail or erudition, they manage to make the text read as compulsively as a Penny Dreadful - and, unusually for a travel guide, there is a laugh on almost every page.
